Flying Bark opens crowdfunding for new 2D animation Doomsweepers – Flying Bark Productions has announced that crowdfunding is now open for Doomsweepers, a new original 2D animation project created and directed by Sarah Harper.
The Sydney-based animation studio is developing the project with Lightfold and content creator Olan Rogers, best known for Final Space on Adult Swim.
For TV Central readers, the announcement keeps the spotlight on Australian animation studios moving further into creator-led, fan-supported screen projects. It also follows Flying Bark and Lightfold’s earlier tease of a new original project, with Doomsweepers now revealed as the title.
A 2D zom-com from Sarah Harper
Doomsweepers is described as an action “zom-com” set inside a mysterious research facility.
The story follows a team of misfit janitors who move from cleaning the staff room to saving the world. Along the way, they begin to uncover the facility’s dark secret.
Flying Bark says the project uses candy-coloured art direction to separate it from more traditional dystopian and apocalyptic stories.
Harper’s credits include Monkie Kid, Glitch Techs and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
A direct-to-fan push
The crowdfunding round marks Flying Bark’s first move into direct-to-fan digital content.
Flying Bark says the model is designed to involve fans early and build stronger connections between artists and audiences.
The longer-term ambition is to build Doomsweepers as a multimedia universe across series, games and comics.
Lightfold recently used crowdfunding for Godspeed, which Flying Bark says led to more than 2.2 million YouTube views, festival selections and awards recognition before securing a multi-million dollar distribution deal.
Flying Bark’s recent animation slate
Flying Bark’s recent credits include Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 for Netflix, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender for Paramount and Shaun Tan’s Tales from Outer Suburbia for ABC and BYUtv.
The company has studio locations in Sydney, Los Angeles and Madrid. It produces original series and feature films, while also providing 2D, hybrid and CG animation services for global clients.
