I Play Rocky key art revealed for Anthony Ippolito’s new film – Roadshow Films has unveiled the key art for I Play Rocky, Peter Farrelly’s film about the making of the original Rocky. Anthony Ippolito stars in the true-story drama, which opens in Australian cinemas on 1 January 2027.
Rather than revisiting the boxing saga with another sequel, I Play Rocky turns to the extraordinary gamble behind the 1976 original. The film follows the young Sylvester Stallone as he insists on playing Rocky Balboa after writing the script himself — the risk that led to one of cinema’s most enduring underdog stories.
The official key art carries the line “The True Underdog Story”, framing Ippolito beneath the familiar raised-arms silhouette associated with Rocky.
About I Play Rocky
A struggling actor with a partially paralysed face and a speech impediment writes a script that a major studio wants to buy, but refuses to sell unless he can play the lead. Turning down an offer of life-changing money, he works for pennies to get the movie made with himself in the starring role.
The original Rocky became the biggest box-office hit of 1976, received 10 Academy Award nominations and won Best Picture. I Play Rocky tells the true story behind its making.
Alongside Ippolito, the cast includes Stephan James, Matt Dillon and AnnaSophia Robb. Farrelly directs.
I Play Rocky will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday 12 September before arriving in Australian cinemas on 1 January 2027.
