Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

John Steffensen previews the Women’s 100m Semi-Finals and Final with Bree Masters the first Australian woman to qualify for an Olympic 100m Semi in 24 years.

“There are three Semi-Finals and out of that eight women will make the final but there is always one Semi-Final of death. I have had a look and it is horrible – Julien Alfred, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Sha’Carri Richardson all in the same Semi-Final. So that changes who I think will get medals now, but it will be fantastic. The Semi-Final is probably the hardest race of the 100m, not the Final. Poor young Bree Masters [is] in that Semi-Final of death as well, so for her this will be an awesome opportunity to grab a personal best.”

“In Semi-Final one, Marie-Jose Ta Lou Smith is the one to watch. Imagine if she goes from fourth straight to Gold. Wouldn’t that just make her day. All that heartbreak, all those years, and goes straight to Gold. I will say it now, Sha’Carri Richardson does not win tomorrow. I think we’re going to find someone like a Julien Alfred, or a Marie-Jose Ta Lou Smith and I even think… [someone] will sneak in like a Tia Clayton from Jamaica. I think with Sha’Carri it will be either daylight between her and second, or she’ll be in the mix if she doesn’t get the right start, which she is known to do and then can’t get it back.”

Stephanie Rice reflects on a momentous morning in the pool with Kaylee McKeown’s history making ‘double double’ in the backstroke and Cameron McEvoy turning past Olympic heartbreak into Gold at his fourth Olympic Games.

“No woman ever has done a double double so this was incredible. To win both the 100 and 200 Back at Tokyo and then come here to Paris and defend both, it is history in the pool. I love the way she races for her dad who passed away four years ago, you can tell she just knows her dad is with her in spirit. It was a really interesting race with the Canadian and US [swimmers]. I think it served her that they weren’t right next to her in the lanes alongside, but it was brilliantly executed race, she’s got fantastic underwater [form]. Whenever someone is the champion going in and they do it when it counts, I really admire that because there’s so much pressure.”

“No Australian has ever won the Men’s 50m Freestyle at an Olympic Games. In a 50 Freestyle anything can happen so for him to execute the most perfect race plan. Straight arm swimming, you see it a lot in the sprint events, but his core is so strong, it’s barely moving, and he just has the most brilliant last 25m of 50m Freestyle and came through just getting a beautiful touch on the wall.”

Stephanie Rice on tomorrow morning’s head-to-head clash in the Women’s 800m Freestyle between Australia’s Ariarne Titmus and USA’s Katie Ledecky.

“Ledecky has to be the favourite in the 800. I think it’s a little more suited to her program of events. She is the 400, 800, 1500m swimmer whereas Ariarne is 200,400, 800. There is no ego swimming in 800m heats, you just need to get through, get yourself a lane in the final and not exert too much energy, and I think that’s what Ariarne did really well. When it comes to the final, her strategy will be, go out hard, she’s a 400 champion of course, she’d want to be ahead at the 400m mark and try to retain that lead as long as possible but that is tough with Katie Ledecky.”

Six-time Olympian and Athens 2004 Gold Medallist Stuart O’Grady previews the gruelling men’s road race hitting the streets of Paris later today.

(clip here)

“The road race is the blue-ribbon event: 273km for the men. It’s an absolutely epic distance and for the first time only 90 riders on the start line so probably the smallest field in Olympic history which is going to become critical. They do a big loop around the outskirts of Paris, the course is really undulating, a lot of lefts and rights, a lot of turns, the wind could be a big factor. We’ve seen a bit of rain on the course which is damp and made these slippery French roads like an ice-skating rink, and then they come in and do 18kms with some climbs up to Montmartre on cobblestones which will give a launch pad for any attacks that come late in the race.”

“It is going to be about 7 – 71/2 hours of racing so a massive day ahead and then come in. Australia only has three riders [Ben O’Connor, Michael Matthews and Simon Clarke], and the biggest countries have four so it will become a real tactical chess game out on the road and will be extremely interesting to watch it unfold. The guys that win these races, there is no luck. There are probably only 10 – 15 guys on the start line who know they can win this, there are a lot of others who it is their dream to get in the top five. The Australians will have to play their cards extremely smart. This is a big moment for Michael Matthews. He’s got what it takes, he just needs the right recipe on the day. We know he’s a super star, I’ll be putting him right up there.”

Ash Barty looks ahead to the showdown everyone was hoping for in the men’s singles at Roland Garros with Carlos Alcaraz up against Novak Djokovic in the Gold medal match.

“Carlos was able to lift his game, work through the gears in his Semi. He was so creative on court. He was in complete control and now we have the Gold medal match everyone was after and hoping for that creates the suspense, against Novak Djokovic. We know Carlos has put himself in a position again to create history. He is becoming the most dominant tennis player on the planet at the moment.”

“Novak made the decision to stay outside the village this year. He has made the decision to completely focus, he felt overwhelmed in Tokyo with the demands of the other athletes, but Carlos loves it. He loves being around the other athletes, absorbing it, taking it all in. If you look at the two approaches, they are very different, but they work for both men. I think Carlos is enjoying the entire experience.”

Ash Barty previews the men’s doubles Gold medal match tonight with Aussies Matt Ebden and John Peers.

“I think now for Peers and Ebden it’s about celebrating and contributing to Australia’s medal count tally. They were so clinical today, it was a very tight first set and then all of a sudden at five-all they got that break and the flood gates opened and they were able to use it to get that confidence, get on a run and steamroll the American team in the end. You can see how much it means to Peers to play in a Gold medal match. I am so happy for the boys, and I know that there are so many Aussies in the tennis world that are just so excited for them.”

12-time PGA winner Geoff Ogilvy looks ahead to Round 3 in the Men’s Golf where at five-under through two rounds, Jason Day leads the way for the Aussies. Min Woo Lee showed tremendous spirit with one of the round’s of the day to make significant inroads on the leaderboard.

“Xander [Schauffele, USA] is doing what we expect him to do, he is the second-best golfer in the world, so he is still leading. He had a good round and backed it up. It’s not easy to back up a really low first round. The feel-good story of Tommy Fleetwood (GB) has also got himself right in the mix.”

“Both the Aussies played well [in Round 2]. Jason played well the first two days, he’s still in the mix, a long way back but anything is possible. He’s tied with Rory McIlroy, and you would think he is also still a chance to win so Jason is a chance to win also with a really good weekend. Min Woo Lee got a little bit of pride back, he had a good day and is back up into the field so he will be feeling a lot better about himself, enjoying his Olympic experience a bit more on day two.”

Dual Gold-Medallist and ‘Oarsome Foursome’ member Nick Green on the Australian Women’s Pairs Final in the rowing:

“I think they [Jess Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre] will be happy with that result, winning a Bronze medal. Won by the Dutch who were superb. They had at least one boat length lead on the rest of the competition in the first 40 seconds of the race and went on to win very comfortably with probably the biggest margin we’ve seen in the Olympic finals to-date in the rowing. The Australians were second all the way until the sprint to the finish line and just got out sprinted by a very famous Romanian crew who are backing up in the women’s eight as well and very experienced. So I think they Australian’s will be happy but slightly disappointed they weren’t able to hang on to the silver.”
