Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:
Grant Hackett on Mollie O’Callaghan producing a superb last 50m to win the Women’s 200m Freestyle Final over Aussie teammate Ariarne Titmus and then welcoming her on to the podium for the Australian anthem:
(Clip here)
“It really shows the character of these athletes. For Mollie and Ariarne there was so much pressure going into this race. Everyone had tipped them to go one and two, they’ve both held the World Record, Molly is the World Champion, at Olympic Trials Ariarne broke that World Record and then we’ve seen them get first and second here. It’s really special those times and moments in sport when you see someone acknowledge the hard work and effort and the rivalry between these two – not only teammates but club-mates – one of those beautiful memories from these Olympic Games.”
Grant Hackett on Kaylee McKeown’s showdown with current World Record holder Regan Smith in the upcoming 100m Backstroke Final:
“This is going to be one the Games’ big, big races. They (Smith and McKeown) have both held the World Record in this race and they’ve even both held the World Record in the 200m Backstroke so these two are really fierce rivals. It’s going to be a matter of who can really nail the underwater really well. If they get the right start and turn, their swimming speed is actually quite similar so you’re going to want to make sure they nail those skills.”
“It’s probably going to take another 0.3 to 0.5 of a second in time drop to take out the Gold Medal. It’s going to be a dogfight right down to the finish. Kaylee’s a racer and she is consistent. She performs at the big meets. She’s ready, she’s fit but she’s also a great racer as well and that’s what you need to be at the Olympics… I think she can get the job done tonight.”
Alicia Lucas reflects on Australia’s dominant display in the Quarter-Final against Ireland which sees them through to the Semi-Final at midnight tonight:
(Clip here)
“It was an incredible victory. A little bit of doubt crept in to some of the viewers after the close pool game but a clinical performance in that Quarter-Final. Dominant Maddi Levi, again. You can’t not say her name when talking about the Australian Women’s Sevens. Three tries in the first half, incredible and then subbing on Bienne Terita, a powerhouse, finishing that game in emphatic fashion.”
“Maddi is absolutely outstanding, and she is making her mark on this Olympics. Her ability to repeat speed and perform on the biggest stage. Hats off to her and all the work that comes from those beside her – Charlotte Caslick feeding her the ball, Tia Hinds who is doing all the dirty work on the ground, Faith Nathan the one that inside of her being the threat that people have to shut down. There’s so many weapons and she (Levi) is that brilliant weapon on the edge.”
Morgan Turinui on the Australian Women’s Sevens team chances against Canada in the Semi-Final and their potential Grand Final opponents New Zealand:
“The Australian team has been disciplined. The harsh matter of the truth is that Australia are better than Canada but you can’t give them a sniff. You have to start fast; you can’t let someone like that put pressure on you at the breakdown. If the Australian team play anywhere near their capacity, they’re just too good for Canada.”
“I reckon they [New Zealand] look more impressive than Australia. They have done it easier; they have been great. Any work done in the midfield that creates a one-on-one mismatch, it’s game over out wide. They’ve had a slightly cruisier draw and that’s what you get coming in ranked number one, but they’ve not had any hiccups and they have been good everywhere. But, the USA are not a gimme Semi-Final. NZ has a harder Semi-Final than Australia does.
Mark Bosnich on the Matildas chances of making it through to the Quarter-Finals:
“A draw will see us through. That will give them four points, third place because of Canada’s deduction of six points – that will be enough. USA have been the team of the tournament thus far followed by Spain. We do have Alana Kennedy and Caitlin Foord [with yellow cards] but I don’t believe we can rest them for the quarter-final. Tony Gustavsson needs to start with a team that can get at least a point.”
Shane Heal on the Australian Women’s Basketball Team’s crushing loss to Nigeria in their first preliminary game:
“They looked disjointed. Potentially it’s the worst loss in Opals history. I can’t remember an Opals or Boomers team losing to an African national team at an Olympics. Twenty-six turnovers, eight from 18 at the free throw line – that is just unheard of for a team at this level. They looked nervous in the second half. Even as bad as they played in the first, you thought come out in the second half, they would play with momentum and get over Nigeria and it didn’t happen.”
“They don’t have much time. They have a really experienced team, an old team. You don’t expect 26 turnovers from a team like that. Credit to Nigeria. They played with more effort; they were tougher. It was like Australia turned up and expected to get this win. They have 12 hours to sook it up and then it’s about being able to find solutions. It’s not all over for them. It’s not doom and gloom. They need to find a way to come back.”
Shane Heal looks ahead to the Boomers next game against Canada:
“The Boomers are going to have confidence now… but Canada have 10 NBA players, and they have some superstars; our players are playing with belief, and they should. The biggest challenge we are going to have will be at the defensive end with Patty Mills and Josh Giddey against RJ Barrett and Jamal Murray. I think we can get it done offensively but we are going to need to lock it down defensively.”
