FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 on Optus Sport – Another action packed day awaits at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.
Sunday saw three matches played with Sweden and Netherlands claiming narrow wins before Jamaica claimed a historic point against heavyweights France.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the fifth day of action, as well as what you missed from the day before.
FROM MATCHDAY 3:
- France 0-0 Jamaica
- Netherlands 1-0 Portugal
- Sweden 2-0 South Africa
What’s on today?
Monday brings with it three more group matches as two more teams play their first ever minutes at a FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Italy v Argentina (4pm AEST)
The first match of the day takes us to Eden Park in Auckland as two iconic football nations face off.
Neither Italy or Argentina are yet to live up to their full potential in women’s football.
But both teams seem to be heading in the right direction having built up to the tournament with some encouraging results.
Group G is wide open so a positive result here could see either team take a big step towards the knockout stages.
Germany v Morocco (6.30pm AEST)
Match two on Monday will take place in Melbourne as Morocco make their Women’s World Cup debut against heavyweights Germany.
First matches don’t come much harder for Morocco with the Germans two-time winners but form does suggest this one could be closer than many would expect
Germany lost two of their last three matches before the tournament including a shock defeat to Zambia to suggest all is not right for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side.
Morocco, meanwhile, are winless across their past five games but did hold Switzerland and Italy to encouraging 0-0 draws. Scoring goals looks likely to be Morocco’s biggest issue as they haven’t found the back of the net across those past five matches.
Brazil v Panama (9pm AEST)
Adelaide will see another Women’s World Cup debutant take to the pitch as Panama face the might of Brazil.
Panama only qualified for the tournament via the play-offs and recent heavy defeats to Spain and Japan don’t bode well for the CONCACAF team.
Brazil won’t make life easy for Panama in this one and will be fired up to ensure iconic forward Marta is sent off a winner at this Women’s World Cup.
Players to watch
Valentina Cernoia (Italy)
One of Italy’s more experienced players, Cernoia will be a vital player for her team in midfield.
The 32-year-old is a serial winner having won Serie A seven times with Brescia and Juventus.
Alexandra Popp (Germany)
One of the best strikers around, Germany will be looking to Popp to deliver in front of goal.
The two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner has scored an impressive 62 goals for her country from 128 caps.
Popp was the joint top scorer at the UEFA Women’s Euros in 2022, scoring six times as Germany finished runners-up.
Marta (Brazil)
The top goal scorer in FIFA Women’s World Cup history is a hard name to go past.
This will be Marta’s sixth and last Women’s World Cup having scored at her previous five appearances.
Despite now being 37, she’s all but certain to bow out in style if history is anything to go by.
