Join 7NEWS this Monday as the nation farewells long-time Seven Network sport broadcaster Dennis Cometti AM, with special live coverage of his State Memorial Service from 2.30pm on Seven Perth and nationally on 7plus.
A towering figure in Australian media, Cometti’s voice shaped generations of sporting moments with unmatched insight, warmth and wit.
7NEWS Perth Presenter Tim McMillan will host the broadcast, guiding viewers through this special tribute and reflecting on Cometti’s extraordinary career and enduring legacy.
7NEWS Perth Sports Presenter Ryan Daniels will report live from the service as friends, family and colleagues gather to honour one of the greats of Australian broadcasting.
The State Memorial will be hosted by sports broadcaster Mark Readings and held in the Riverview Room at Optus Stadium, the ground where Cometti made his legendary calls in the sunset of his career.
The service will be attended by dignitaries including WA Premier Roger Cook and State Opposition Leader and former colleague Basil Zempilas, with acclaimed broadcaster Bruce McAvaney delivering a tribute to his longtime colleague and friend.
Live coverage will be broadcast on Seven Perth from 2.30pm, with viewers around the country able to watch via 7plus.
Extended coverage and reflections will continue until 4.00pm, as Australia remembers a man whose voice became the soundtrack to some of the nation’s greatest sporting moments.
As announced earlier this year, Seven will broadcast a documentary into the life and career of Cometti later this year, aptly titled Centimetre Perfect and led by Bruce McAvaney.
Cometti spent 26 years at the Seven Network from 1986 to 2001, and again from 2007 until his final match on Seven, the 2016 AFL Grand Final on 1 October 2016.
Starting his media career as a radio announcer in Perth in 1968, while also juggling a playing career with West Perth in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL), Cometti then went on to work for the ABC between 1972 and 1985 and Nine Network between 2002 and 2006, before returning home to Seven in 2007.
Separate to his AFL achievements, Cometti also covered three Summer Olympics for Seven including Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, where Australians heard a raft of iconic moments which included Gold Medal heroics from Susie O’Neill, Kieren Perkins and Ian Thorpe.
Dennis Cometti’s career achievements:
- 1973: At just 23 years of age, Dennis Cometti become the youngest person to broadcast Test cricket on the ABC and continued to do so for the next 13 years.
- Voted the Television Caller of the Year by the Australian Football Media Association (AFMA) a record 11 times
- 2006: Alf Potter Award for the season’s most outstanding media personality by the AFMA
- 2017: Winner of the West Australian of the Year Awards – Sport category
- 2018: Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in sports journalism at the Sport Australia Media Awards
- 2019: Inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame as a General Member for Sports Media
- 2019: Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the broadcast media as a sports presenter
- 2019: Inducted into the MCG Hall of Fame
- 2019: Inducted into the AFMA Hall of Fame
- 2020: Inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame for his services to media and broadcasting
