Obsession defies expectations with remarkable Australian box office surge – In an era dominated by established franchises and familiar intellectual property, horror thriller Obsession is proving that original storytelling can still draw audiences to cinemas in remarkable numbers.
The Blumhouse-produced psychological horror has emerged as one of Australia’s biggest theatrical success stories of 2026, posting extraordinary week-on-week growth rarely seen in the genre.
A horror phenomenon gains momentum
Distributed locally by Rialto Distribution, Obsession recorded a staggering 91 per cent increase at the Australian box office during its second week in cinemas.
The momentum continued into week three, with the film climbing a further 68 per cent — an exceptional achievement for any theatrical release, particularly within the horror space.
Since opening in Australian cinemas on 14 May, the film has amassed an impressive $12,770,111 at the local box office.
Exhibitor confidence has grown alongside audience demand, with Obsession expanding from 155 screens at launch to 233 screens nationwide.

A victory for original filmmaking
Written and directed by Curry Barker, Obsession follows a young man whose supernatural attempt to win the affection of his crush unleashes terrifying consequences.
The film stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette and has struck a chord with audiences both in Australia and internationally.
Giles Edwards, Head of Acquisitions and Development at Rialto International, said the film’s success highlighted the appetite for original stories on the big screen.
“To see impassioned, furiously talented creatives like Curry Barker bloom and blossom so undeniably in an era of IP-saturation is beyond thrilling to witness, let alone be a part of,” Edwards said.
“Obsession’s overwhelming global success is wonderful for cinema, a victory lap for the genre, a jolt of energy for fans, and, most importantly, a much-needed reminder for distributors and exhibitors that audiences will show up for that vital in-theatre experience.
“The whole industry wins in this scenario, and we are incredibly grateful.”
Strong reviews fuel audience interest
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Obsession has continued to build momentum through positive reviews and enthusiastic word-of-mouth.
The film currently holds a 96 per cent critics’ score and a 94 per cent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised its performances, emotional depth and inventive approach to horror.
Film Ink described the movie as:
“A terrific, chilling and astonishingly well acted horror film with a genuinely fantastic lead turn from an actress destined for stardom.”
Meanwhile, Switch called it:
“Equal parts nasty, hilarious and emotionally intelligent,” adding that it marks Curry Barker as “a major new director to keep an eye on.”
TikTok helping drive cinema attendance
Beyond traditional marketing, Obsession has benefited from sustained online discussion, particularly across TikTok, where audiences have shared reactions and encouraged others to experience the film in cinemas.
The resulting wave of recommendations has helped transform the release into one of the year’s most talked-about horror success stories.
At a time when the future of theatrical exhibition continues to evolve, Obsession is offering a timely reminder that compelling original films can still generate excitement, conversation and packed cinema sessions.
Obsession is now showing in Australian cinemas.
