Obsession Surpasses $25 Million at the ANZ Box Office – Rialto Distribution is celebrating a major box office milestone, with horror phenomenon Obsession passing $25 million across Australia and New Zealand.
The film is now on track to become the highest-grossing horror release in Australia and New Zealand in the past 10 years, after building sustained momentum through its theatrical run on both sides of the Tasman.
Eight weeks on from its mid-May release, Obsession continues to hold a top-five position at the box office, and earlier this week climbed as high as number three. Rialto says the result reflects strong word-of-mouth, passionate fans and the enduring appeal of horror on the big screen.
“To see Obsession reach $25 million across Australia and New Zealand is an incredible achievement. Horror has always been one of the most powerful theatrical genres, and audiences have embraced this film in a way few could have predicted,” Kelly Rogers, CEO of Rialto Distribution, said.
Rogers added that the milestone is testament to the film’s word-of-mouth, fan support and the pull of seeing a terrifying story unfold in cinemas.
Written, directed and edited by Curry Barker in his feature directorial debut, Obsession follows Bear, a shy music store employee played by Michael Johnston, who wishes for his co-worker and long-time crush Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him. The wish comes true, but at a dark and sinister cost.
The cast also includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter. Produced on a modest budget, the film has become a word-of-mouth horror hit, with audiences responding to its unsettling premise, atmosphere and performances.
The performance is a notable result for a genre film this deep into its theatrical run, defying the usual box office trajectory and showing that horror can keep audiences returning to cinemas week after week.
