My Brilliant Career is now streaming on Netflix – My Brilliant Career, the new series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s beloved Australian novel, is now streaming on Netflix.
The launch gives Australian audiences a fresh screen version of Sybylla Melvyn’s story, with Philippa Northeast leading the cast as a young woman determined to become a writer in 1900 Australia.
For Netflix, the release also gives the streamer another locally made Australian drama with a clear literary hook. It follows earlier attention around the show’s South Australian production footprint, which TV Central covered in a separate story.
A New Take On An Australian Classic
My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla, a modern-minded young woman with one fierce ambition: to become a writer. Her family, however, is determined to marry her off.
As Sybylla breaks the conventions of 1900 Australia, she searches for a story that will let her write her way to independence. That choice becomes more complicated when she falls in love.
The series stars Philippa Northeast as Sybylla Melvyn, alongside Christopher Chung as Harry Beecham. The cast also includes Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden.
Critics Respond To The Series
The release arrives with positive notices from local and international critics, with reviews highlighting the adaptation’s feminist themes, romance, landscape and Northeast’s performance as Sybylla.
Netflix’s release points to coverage from outlets including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian UK, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and TV Tonight.

Further contributors include Bri Lee, Sunny Adcock, Anna Mackenzie, Anita Heiss, Hannah Ferguson, Dr Michelle Wong, Lucy Blackiston, Soph Hirst, Zara Wong, Rachael Akhidenor and others.
