My Brilliant Career sets South Australian television milestone – My Brilliant Career has launched globally on Netflix as the biggest single season of television ever made in South Australia.
The new series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s novel was filmed in South Australia last year with support from the South Australian Film Corporation.
For Australian screen industry watchers, the launch is significant beyond the series itself. The production shows how global streaming commissions can bring major economic activity, training opportunities and long-term screen-sector momentum into local states and regions.
South Australian Impact
The SAFC says My Brilliant Career delivered an anticipated $19 million in direct production spend for South Australia.
The production employed 600 South Australians across creative, crew, cast and extras roles. It also engaged 410 South Australian businesses across services including hospitality, accommodation and transport.
Filming took place across South Australia, including regional landscapes and historic houses in the Southern Barossa region and South East, metropolitan Adelaide and the SAFC’s Adelaide Studios.
A New Adaptation
The contemporary adaptation is developed and written by Liz Doran, whose credits include Please Like Me and Barons.
It is executive produced by Jungle Entertainment’s Chloe Rickard, Doran and Alyssa McClelland, who also serves as the series set-up director. South Australian producer Paul Ranford, of Jetty Films, produces the series.
My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla, a young woman determined to become a writer as her family pushes her towards marriage. She breaks convention in 1900 Australia while chasing a creative life and navigating love.
Philippa Northeast leads the cast as Sybylla. The ensemble also includes Christopher Chung, Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden.
My Brilliant Career is now streaming on Netflix.
