AUSSIES IN ACTION
Swimming
- Australia has won Gold in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay in a dominant display to defeat USA and China with a new Olympic Record. Mollie O’Callaghan has joined Ian Thorpe and Emma McKeon as the only Australians with five or more Olympic Gold medals, while Ariarne Titmus now has four Gold.
- Elizabeth (Lizzie) Dekkers has finished just off the podium in fourth in the Women’s 200m Butterfly, won by Canadian teenage sensation Summer McIntosh in Olympic Record time. Abbey Connor was seventh.
- Cam McEvoy will start the Men’s 50m Freestyle alongside Team GB’s Ben Proud in the middle of the pool after the pair finished equal first following the Semi-Finals.
- Kaylee McKeown has the opportunity to take the 100/200 Backstroke double at two straight Olympics after qualifying second for tomorrow’s 200m Backstroke Final.
Women’s 20km Walk
- Jemima Montag has won Australia’s first athletics medal in Paris, taking Bronze in the 20km walk to become only the second Australian woman to secure a podium finish in Olympic walking. Jane Saville won Bronze in the same event at the 2004 Athens Games.
BMX Racing
- Saya Sakakibara was dominant on her way through the Quarter-Finals, winning all three races to proceed to tomorrow’s Semi-Finals. Lauren Reynolds also qualified for the Semi-Finals in ninth place.
- In the Men’s event, Isaac Kennedy got better and better through the rounds with a fifth, second and first to finish sixth in qualifying and also proceed to the Semi-Finals.
Sailing
- Grae Morris is assured of an Australian medal for Windsurfing, proceeding directly to the Medal Race after topping the standings in the qualifying series. Australia last won an Olympic Windsurfing medal at Barcelona in 1992.
- In the Men’s Dinghy, Tokyo Gold Medallist Matt Wearn made a strong start to his competition, sitting in second after the first two races in the class.
Canoe Slalom
- Tim Anderson was just over two seconds off the podium in a fantastic performance in the Men’s K1, finishing seventh.
Rowing
- Australia finished sixth in the Men’s Four Final, unable to defend the Gold Medal won three years ago in Tokyo.
Water Polo
- The Sharks have backed up their heroic performance against Serbia with a 9-8 win over France in front of a raucous home crowd. They sit second in Group B with matches to come against Hungary and Japan.
Beach Volleyball
- Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy are still on track for another podium campaign following their victory over Canada in their final pool match.
- Tom Hodges and Zach Schubert were a set up against the world number three ranked German team but fell late in an enthralling encounter. They must win their final match against France to keep their chances alive.
- Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher, Australia’s youngest ever Men’s Olympic Beach Volleyball team, fought bravely but ultimately went down to Qatar who topped their pool.
Hockey
- The Kookaburras have qualified for the Men’s Quarter-Finals following a commanding 5-0 win over New Zealand. They have one more pool match to play against India to determine their final pool standing.
- The Hockeyroos remain undefeated and on top of Pool B following a last minute goal to Mariah Williams to secure a 3-3 draw with Argentina.
Basketball
- The Opals campaign is back on track following their opening match defeat to Nigeria, overcoming Canada 70-65 in a tight contest.
3×3 Basketball
- The Gangurrus are on top of the Women’s 3×3 Basketball standings following two more victories overnight, including taking down the highly-fancied USA
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Gymnastics
- Simone Biles (USA) has firmly established herself as one of the all-time greats, taking out Gold in the Women’s All-Around Final. She becomes just the third woman in history to win the title twice.
Athletics
- Ecuador’s Brian Pintado won the Men’s 20km Walk, earning his country’s first Olympic Gold medal in athletics since fellow race walker Jefferson Perez won gold in this discipline at the 1996 Olympics.
Swimming
- Summer McIntosh (CAN) picked up her second Gold and third medal of Paris 2024 with victory in the 200m Butterfly in Olympic Record time. She adds the title to the Gold she won in the 400m Individual Medley and Silver in the 400m Freestyle behind Ariarne Titmus.
- Hubert Kos broke through for Hungary’s first Gold medal of the Games, powering over Apostolos Christou (GRE) in the final stages to clinch victory in the Men’s 200m Backstroke.
- In the Women’s 200m Breaststroke, Kate Douglass (USA) finished second behind Tatjana Smith at the 2023 World Championships but turned the tables on the South African to take top spot on the podium.
Tennis
- China’s Zheng Qinwen has caused a major upset, defeating Iga Swiatek (POL) in straight sets in the Women’s semi-final. Swiatek has won the French Open at Roland Garros on four occasions and had been undefeated at the famed venue since 2022. Zheng will play Anna
Following overnight results the Men’s Semi-Finals have been decided with Novak Djokovic (SRB) to face Lorenzo Musetti (ITA) while Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) meets Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN)
