Australia without head coach ahead of World Cup kicking off in less than 6 months.
CP: I have a concern with the Australian Rugby League commission. We do not have a world cup coach as of yet. Kevvy Walters was the coach last year for the Ashes, and signed a 12 month contract, which he is still currently under. That contract will run out before the world cup is announced and the teams are picked. What is the Australian Rugby League commission waiting for? The coach is front and centre taking media questions about the WC coming up, but he doesn’t understand know if he has a role.
DR: I think Kevvy is the short price favourite. Only other major projects have been holding this up. The current broadcast rights deal has been occupying Peter V’Landy’s time for some time now. I don’t think it’s a burning issue.
AW: But you’ve gotta plan.
LK: Is anyone else’s name being tossed up?
CP: Cameron Smith’s name is being tossed up, there are another former players waiting.
DR: Kevvy has also lost Willie Peters as his assistant coach for the Kangaroos. That will be part of the discussion too.
Josh Addo-Carr tells 7NEWS’ Jelisa Apps “New Zealand are our biggest threat” six months out from the Rugby League World Cup.
JA: The World Cup means a lot to you.
JAC: It does, it’s a privilege to put the Kangaroo’s jersey on. I’ve had the opportunity play in the last World Cup and the last Ashes series. Kevvy has created something special there. He’s brought some young guys in, and I’m an older head now, and I’m just trying to motivate and inspire these fellas. Playing in the Kangaroos is probably one of the best things I’ve ever done.
JA: Do you think this will be one of the toughest World Cups?
JAC: By far. With that the NRL are doing, and what the pacifica boys are doing. They are representing their motherlands and heritage on the world stage, and putting them on the map. Hats off to them.
JA: Who is the biggest threat?
JAC: New Zealand are our biggest threat. We’ve got them first. But also Tonga and Samoa – those boys are really thriving through the NRL. It will be a tough campaign but we are looking forward to the challenge.
