Matthew Richardson out of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games – Seven’s Glasgow 2026 coverage has reported that Matthew Richardson has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games after sustaining an injury in international racing.
Matt Shirvington and Emma Freedman discussed the news during Seven’s broadcast as track cycling got underway in Glasgow. Richardson, a former Australian track cyclist, had been due to compete for Team England.
For Australian viewers, Richardson’s withdrawal is a significant Games storyline because of his recent history with the Australian cycling program. He won three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics and also won gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games before switching allegiance to England.
Team England statement
Shirvington read a Team England Commonwealth Games statement during Seven’s coverage.
The statement said Richardson would no longer be able to compete at Glasgow 2026 because of an injury sustained in international racing earlier this week.
Team England also wished Richardson a speedy recovery and said it looked forward to seeing him back on the track soon.
Seven reacts to Richardson withdrawal
Freedman said the split between Richardson and the Australian cycling setup had been a difficult one. She said the Australian team had been devastated and angry about how the move unfolded.
Shirvington noted that Richardson had won bronze in the team sprint in Paris with cyclists who are now competing at the Commonwealth Games.
He also pointed to the extra edge created by Richardson being set to wear Team England colours against Australia at a Commonwealth Games.
Freedman summed up the situation by saying it had been a bad breakup and had ended badly for Richardson, at least for now.
