Alex Perkins wins Glasgow 2026 gold in women’s 50m butterfly – Alex Perkins has won gold for Australia in the women’s 50m butterfly at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Perkins delivered a powerful start and held off South Africa’s Erin Gallagher, with New Zealand’s Hazel Hauerhand taking bronze.
For Seven’s Games coverage, the race added another sharp Australian gold-medal moment in the pool. It also highlighted the value of technical starts and underwater work in the shortest butterfly event.
A decisive start
Perkins emerged ahead after an excellent underwater phase, giving herself the space she needed over the sprint distance.
Her start has to be one of the most impressive dives I’ve actually ever seen.
Ariarne Titmus
Annie Williams said Perkins went deeper than the rest of the field and came up strongly near the 15-metre mark.
Alister Nicholson noted that Perkins’ winning time was only six hundredths of a second outside the Australian record she shares with Holly Barratt.
Perkins reacts to gold
Speaking with Giaan Rooney after the race, Perkins said the result had not fully sunk in.
It doesn’t really feel real. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.
