Bonus Weekend Analysis

Every afternoon Nine releases figures for Hot Seat and Hot Seat – 5pm but that does not paint a full picture about what is happening in that 5pm hour. The Hot Seat figure is for 5:30pm in Sydney Brisbane and Melbourne. The figure for Adelaide is for where the show airs in that market which is 4:30pm and for Perth it is 3:30pm. Hot Seat – 5pm is similar with Adelaide’s figures coming from 4pm and Perth at 3pm.

So let’s have a look at the figures for yesterday:

The Chase 5:30pm

Sydney 109 000

Melbourne 128 000

Brisbane 73 000

Adelaide 47 000

Perth 70 000

Hot Seat 5:30pm (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) Nin’s Afternoon News (Adelaide, Perth)
*Note: Figures for Nine’s Afternoon News are across the full hour as Nine do not separate the half hours

Sydney 71 000

Melbourne 100 000

Brisbane 66 000

Adelaide 38 000

Perth 29 000

Analysis

Hot Seat’s figures in Adelaide are 23 000, so the figure we get each day for what most people would think is Hot Seat v The Chase is down around 15k on what actually occurs at 5:30pm The gap is even wider in Perth with that market recording just 9000 viewers for Hot Seat, when in fact there is 29 000 viewers in that 5:30 slot. (average figure of 5pm – 6pm).

The Chase Australia – 427 000

Hot Seat – 304 000(if looking at time slot) which is larger than the 270 000 that is quoted.

Presumably, the 5:30pm half hour of the news in Adelaide and Perth would be higher, than the average figures quoted across the hour, so the final figure of 304k would be even larger.

At the end of the day, for yesterday, The Chase Australia beat Hot Seat in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane anyway and it appears that The Chase beats Nine’s News offerings in Adelaide and Perth. However, the timeslot head to head stats for Hot Seat would be more than 35k on what we see each day.

For transparency, what goes up, must come down. Whilst time slot v show might not favour the figure we see as Hot Seat, it does favour Nine’s Afternoon News and Tipping Point slots v name. Tipping Point airs at 4pm in Perth so the viewership figure would be ‘larger’ in Perth that what we presume is networked 3pm programming. Similarly, Nine’s Afternoon News would have what appears as inflated figure in Adelaide and Perth because the Afternoon News is run nationally between 4pm and 5pm but the figure we see is between 5pm and 6pm.

Nine are using correct figures for the show – not changing it to what is in the slot, however, if people look at the raw data in rankings and say The Chase beat Hot Seat or Nine’s Afternoon News beat Seven’s Afternoon News or Tipping Point beat The Chase UK, those figures could be inaccurate unless you had moved around the Adelaide and Perth figures and matched them with the actual timeslot.
