Saturday Ratings – Carols by Candlelight is #1 overall in overnights, whilst Doc Martin tops non news in Total TV

TOTAL TV – Total People

Seven News – Saturday was #1 with 1,098 000, a rise of 2%. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Session 3 was #3 with 848 000 fans. Due to Seven not having BVOD rights for 7plus, there was no uptick in Total TV. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Tea was #7 with 724 000. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Session 2 was #8 with 687 000. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Session 1 was #10 with 546 000. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Lunch was #11 with 530 000. Weekend Sunrise – Saturday was #12 with 402 000, an upswing of 3%. Weekend Sunrise – Saturday Early was #15 with 303 000, a lift of 4%. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Pre Game was #17 with 275 000. Weekend Sunrise – Saturday Late was #19 with 265 000, an increase of 3%. 2022 Schools Spectacular Creating the Magic was #20 with 259 000, a boost of 13%. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 Session 3 Multi Channel was #22 with 241 000.

Nine News Saturday was #5 with 799 000, growth of 3%. A Current Affair – Saturday was #9 with 644 000, strengthening its overnights by 5%. 2022 FINA World Short Course Championships was #14 with 333 000, bolstering its audience by 4%. Country House Hunters Australia was #16 with 286 000, an upsurge of 4%. Weekend Today – Saturday was #18 with 267 000, an improvement of 6%. Weekend Today – Saturday Late was #24 with 217 000, expanding its viewership by 6%. The movie, Daddy’s Home 2 was #27 with 185 000, an enhancement of 8%. Nine News: First at Five was #28 with 180 000, an uplift of 3%. Weekend Today – Saturday Early was #29 with 178 000, up 5%. The movie, Licence to Kill was #30 with 172 000, a rise of 4%.

10 News First Saturday was #21 with 246 000, an upswing of 2%.

ABC had a strong night with Doc Martin coming in at #2 with 1,042 000, an upswing of 38%. Shetland was #4 with 812 000, a lift of 43%. ABC News Saturday was #6 with 773 000, an increase of 3%.A repeat of Midsomer Murders was #13 with 360 000, a boost of 11%. A repeat of Vera was #23 with 219 000, growth of 14%. Weekend Breakfast was #25 with 189 000, strengthening its overnight numbers by 5%, but that number does not include those watching on the ABC News multi channel. A repeat of The ABC Of was #26 with 187 000, bolstering its audience by 3%.

TOTAL TV – 25-54

Seven completely dominated in this demographic with Seven News – Saturday at #1 with 279 000, an upsurge of 4%. Seven’s Cricket: First Test – Australia v South Africa Day 1 took positions #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, #13 and #14. Showing that Doc Martin and Shetland have an older audience meant that Doc Martin placed #9 (vs #2 in total people) and Shetland placed #11 (vs #4 in total people). The movie, Daddy’s Home 2 proved more popular in this demographic than in total people placing #16 with 84 000, an improvement of 9%.

OVERNIGHT RATINGS


Analysis

Carols by Candelight was #1 overall and helped Nine achieve a 40%+ share for its primary channel. The telecast was watched by 891 000 viewers in the 5 city metro markets. The show completely dominated in its hometown of Melbourne with 404 000. The show was #1 in Sydney as well with 262 000. The show was #3 in Brisbane after Seven and Nine News with 93 000 viewers. The program was #1 in Adelaide with 80 000 viewers. The show placed #4 in Perth behind Seven News, ABC News and Doc Martin with an audience of 52 000. Across the regional markets the show added 309 000, placing #2 after Seven News.

Nine News Saturday was #3 for the night, with wins in Sydney and Melbourne. A repeat of Christmas with Delta was watched by 472 000 and placed #4. A Current Affair – Saturday was #5 with 466 000 viewers.

Seven News – Saturday was #2 for the night behind Nine’s Carols by Candelight and had wins in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The movie, Moana was #10 with 199 000. The movie, Elf had 116 000.

An encore of Have You Been Paying Attention looking back at 2022, had 116 000 viewers for 10. The second of two repeats of Bondi Rescue had 102 000. A repeat of The Dog House UK had 102 000 viewers. The first repeat of Bondi Rescue had 78 000 viewers. A repeat of Jamie: Easy Meals at Christmas had just 76 000 viewers.

Doc Martin had 462 000 viewers for ABC and placing #6 for the night, for the final episode of the season. There is still the Christmas special to go, before the series signs off for good. Shetland was #8 with 303 000. Expect massive gains for both of these British imports for the Total TV report next week. ABC News was #7 with 443 000. A repeat of Midsomer Murders had 153 000 for #19.

Multi Channels

Winner: 10 Peach (2.6%)

Second: 9Gem (2.2%)

With Australia glued to Carols by Candelight, the highest multi channel, 10 Peach, was able to win with just a 2.8% share. There were only two programs airing on 10 Peach for that win – 10 back to back episodes of The Big Bang Theory, followed by 4 back to back episodes of Friends. 46 000 viewers watching It’s a Wonderful Life on 9Gem, was enough for the multi channel to secure second.
