Vale: Hayden Panettiere, Heroes and Nashville star, dies aged 36 – Hayden Panettiere, the actor known to millions of television viewers through Heroes and Nashville, has died aged 36.
Her death was confirmed by her family and representatives to major outlets including The Associated Press and The Guardian. No cause of death has been disclosed.
For Australian viewers, Panettiere was part of a wave of US television that had a strong local presence. Heroes originally screened in Australia on Channel 7 and became very well known here, while Nashville aired locally on Foxtel.
Heroes made Panettiere a genre-TV favourite. Later, Nashville gave her one of her richest roles and showed her work as both actor and singer.
Heroes Made Her A Global TV Name
Panettiere broke through internationally as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes. Claire was the cheerleader whose healing power became central to the show’s story.
The series became one of the key network dramas of the late 2000s. It mixed superhero ideas with mystery, family drama and big serial storytelling.
As Claire, Panettiere gave the show one of its most recognisable characters. The role also made her familiar to audiences around the world.
Nashville Gave Her A Second TV Chapter
Panettiere later starred as Juliette Barnes in Nashville. The country music drama ran for six seasons across ABC and CMT in the United States.
The role earned her two Golden Globe nominations. It also let her combine drama and music in a character built around fame, ambition and pain.
Juliette became a major part of Panettiere’s screen legacy. Through the role, she played confidence and vulnerability across a long television arc.
Film, Voice Work And Scream
Before her adult television success, Panettiere had already worked for years. Her early credits included One Life to Live, Guiding Light, A Bug’s Life and Remember the Titans.
She also became a favourite of horror fans as Kirby Reed in Scream 4. She later returned to the franchise in Scream VI.
Across those roles, Panettiere moved between family films, TV drama, genre work and voice acting with ease.
A Public Life Under Pressure
In recent years, Panettiere spoke publicly about addiction, postpartum depression and the pressure of growing up in the entertainment industry.
Those parts of her life were often reported heavily. However, she also tried to speak about pain, recovery and motherhood in her own words.
Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023. Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former partner Wladimir Klitschko.
People reported that Panettiere had recently been promoting her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The book reflected on fame, family, addiction and recovery.
Remembered Through Television
For television audiences, Panettiere leaves behind two roles that defined very different dramas: Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville.
Both characters placed young women under intense public pressure. Both roles also drew on the mix of strength and fragility that marked much of her best work.
Panettiere’s death is a sad loss for viewers who grew up with her performances and for those who discovered her later through streaming, film and franchise work.
