Channel 9 clears the decks as major shows disappear from local slate – Channel 9 appears to be clearing the decks across a significant part of its local factual, lifestyle and entertainment slate, with a number of programs unlikely to return while others remain in limbo ahead of Nine’s next major programming announcements.
TV Central understands several production companies have been left surprised that further seasons of some Nine titles have not eventuated. In other cases, the absence of new-season announcements or visible production activity suggests some programs may simply have reached the end of their current life.
The movement matters because Nine has long relied on a broad mix of local factual, lifestyle, reality and entertainment brands to fill its schedule across Channel 9 and 9Now. A leaner slate would point to a more selective approach as the network weighs returning brands, new commissions and cost pressures across the wider television market.
Channel 9 was contacted for comment and given five days to respond, but did not respond.
Shows without confirmed new seasons
Programs including Human Error, Listing Melbourne, RPA, Madam, Big Miracles, Holiday Home Makeover, Aussie Road Train Truckers, Opal Hunters: Red Dirt Road Trip, Beyond the Build, Taronga: Who’s Who in the Zoo, SHARK!, West Coast Cops and Outback: Murder Highway have either reached the end of their current runs or have no new season presently confirmed.
That does not mean every one of those programs has been formally cancelled. Some may remain available for Nine to revisit, while others may have been designed for shorter runs or specific production cycles.
Human Error and Listing Melbourne look unlikely to continue
One of the clearest examples appears to be Human Error. The six-part Australian drama premiered on Nine in 2024 and starred Leeanna Walsman. While there was some discussion at the time about whether the series could continue, there has been no season two announcement, no visible production movement and no indication that another season is moving forward.
The same appears true for Listing Melbourne. Nine’s high-end property series aired its first season in 2024, but there has been no sign of a second season since. With no obvious production activity across 2025 or 2026, the series now appears unlikely to return.
RPA is another notable absence. The iconic medical factual series was revived by Nine after a long break and reached season 20, but there has been no new-season announcement for season 21. Given the history of the brand, another revival can never be completely ruled out, but for now RPA appears to have fallen silent again.
Recent titles remain quiet
Several more recent Nine programs have also completed their current runs without subsequent seasons being announced. Madam has aired one season, while Big Miracles has completed three. Holiday Home Makeover and Aussie Road Train Truckers have each aired a single season.
Opal Hunters: Red Dirt Road Trip has now completed two seasons. Without any third-season announcement or visible production activity, it appears to have reached its conclusion.
Beyond the Build, West Coast Cops and SHARK! have each completed their current runs without new seasons being announced. Their futures may simply be held for Nine’s next slate reveal, but at this stage there is no public confirmation of further episodes.
Taronga: Who’s Who in the Zoo remains one of the more notable programs without a new commission. The series has reached six seasons and continues to have library value for Nine and 9Now, including through FAST-style viewing, but there has been no season seven announcement.
Outback: Murder Highway also remains without a second season. Because the true-crime series was built around a specific group of cases, it may always have been more likely to operate as a contained one-season production than an ongoing franchise.
Budget Battlers, Future House and TopKnotz show signs of life
It is not all bad news for Nine’s local slate. Budget Battlers should not be counted among the casualties, with industry distribution material indicating a third season is planned as another six-episode run.
There are also signs pointing to a second season of Jamie Durie’s Future House. The first season marked Jamie Durie’s return to regular Australian television and focused on sustainable, innovative and future-facing housing. While Nine has not formally launched a second season to viewers, references connected to the program indicate more is progressing.
TopKnotz is another title that should not yet be written off. Recent material connected to the production points towards further episodes or a continuation of the program, although whether that is ultimately packaged as additional season one material or a formal second season remains to be seen.
Major brands await Nine’s next call
A separate group of Nine programs should be treated as awaiting renewal rather than finished. That includes major brands such as LEGO Masters Australia, The Hundred with Andy Lee and The Floor.
LEGO Masters Australia is awaiting confirmation of season nine. The franchise remains one of Nine’s most recognisable entertainment formats and has continued to be used in special-event form, including Bricktacular.
The Hundred with Andy Lee is awaiting season 10, while Andy Lee’s other Nine format, The Floor, is awaiting a decision on season three. Both are the type of returning brands that may be addressed as part of Nine’s next broader programming slate.
Other titles understood to be awaiting decisions include Parental Guidance, Australian Crime Stories: The Investigators, Find My Beach House Australia, Naked City: Hitmen, Events That Changed Australia, Escape to the Chateau and Find My Country House Australia.
A leaner Channel 9 slate?
What appears clear is that Nine is taking a more selective approach to which local productions receive another season. Some programs may have naturally reached the end of their life. Others are still waiting for the network’s next programming cycle.
The next upfronts will be important for determining how many of Nine’s factual, lifestyle and entertainment titles survive into 2027, and which brands the network chooses to place at the centre of its next free-to-air and streaming schedule.
