Supergirl Review (2026): Milly Alcock Delivers a Fun and Surprising Cosmic Adventure — Expectations were modest heading into Supergirl. After decades of Superman and Supergirl stories on screen, another trip into the DC universe didn’t exactly feel essential. But, much like this year’s Superman, this latest chapter is an unexpected surprise.
Rather than retreading familiar ground in Metropolis, Supergirl takes audiences on a largely interstellar adventure, embracing aliens, quirky characters and a much more galactic tone. In many ways, it feels less like a traditional Superman spin-off and more like a space fantasy packed with colourful worlds and eccentric personalities.
Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El is also refreshingly different. This isn’t the polished, picture-perfect hero many fans may be expecting. Instead, she’s flawed, messy and often hilariously offbeat, spending much of the film’s early stages drunk and hungover before reluctantly being pulled into an adventure that forces her to step up.
At the centre of the story is an unlikely partnership between Supergirl and young alien Ruthye Marye Knoll, played brilliantly by Eve Ridley. The bond that develops between the pair becomes the emotional heart of the film and gives the story far more weight than its simple premise initially suggests.
And yes, on paper, the plot does sound surprisingly thin. Much of the film’s journey is driven by the fate of Supergirl’s beloved dog, Krypto. It’s a premise that could easily have felt ridiculous. Yet audiences have long proven they’ll watch endless destruction and violence on screen, but the moment a pet is threatened, the emotional stakes suddenly become enormous. It’s a concept that worked for John Wick, and remarkably, it works here too.
The supporting cast elevates the material throughout. Jason Momoa may only appear in small sections of the film as Lobo, but every moment he is on screen is memorable. Following larger-than-life performances in recent years, including his scene-stealing turn in Fast X, Momoa once again proves he has an incredible ability to dominate the screen with charisma and energy.
The visual effects are impressive, creating a rich and expansive universe that feels distinct from previous DC films. There are appearances from Superman, but make no mistake, this is very much Supergirl’s story and never feels like a team-up movie.
What ultimately makes Supergirl work is its willingness to be different. By stepping away from Earth and embracing a more cosmic, adventurous tone, the film carves out its own identity within the new DC Universe.
It may not have the deepest story, but it’s a fun, entertaining and unexpectedly charming ride that proves there’s plenty of life left in these iconic characters.

A trip to the movies is about more than just the film itself, and once again, Event Cinemas Innaloo delivered a fantastic all-round experience.
One of the great things about the Innaloo complex is the convenience. Grabbing dinner at Varsity next door before the movie made for the perfect start to the evening, with the restaurant just steps away from the cinema entrance. Dinner and then straight into the movie – it doesn’t get much easier than that.
The film was screened in the IMAX auditorium, and the experience was exceptional. The screen was flawless, the sound was immersive, and the picture quality was absolutely stunning. As one of Perth’s newer cinema complexes, everything still feels fresh, modern and impeccably clean, which only adds to the premium experience.
The staff were also fantastic, helping make the evening even more enjoyable. And, of course, a special shout-out has to go to Corinne, who made sure there was plenty of No Sugar Coke available. After a previous visit where the dreaded words “we’re out of No Sugar Coke” nearly caused a cinematic crisis, her efforts this time around certainly didn’t go unnoticed!
From the excellent facilities and premium IMAX presentation to the friendly staff and convenient dining options, Event Cinemas Innaloo remains one of Perth’s best places to catch the latest blockbuster.
