StudioCanal releases new image from Bill Condon’s The Road Home — StudioCanal has released a first look at The Road Home, the new feature from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bill Condon.
The image shows Thabo Rametsi as South African trumpeter, composer and activist Hugh Masekela. The film is now shooting on location in South Africa.
For Australian cinema audiences, the project is already worth watching. StudioCanal is financing the film and will distribute The Road Home in Australia and New Zealand, alongside South Africa, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Benelux and Poland.
The Road Home Cast
The Road Home stars Rametsi, Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, Academy Award nominee Guy Pearce and actor musician Johnny Flynn.
Rametsi plays Masekela and also serves as an executive producer on the film. Erivo plays Miriam ‘Mama Africa’ Makeba, Pearce plays anti-apartheid advocate Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, and Flynn plays Paul Simon.
Rametsi said the team hopes the film honours the artists at the centre of the story. He said stories about giants need to be told loudly and with care.
Bill Condon Directs
Condon directs from an original script by Michael Bronner, from a story by Bronner and Zakes Mda. Condon’s credits include Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
The story follows Masekela while he is exiled from South Africa. He is pulled between worlds when the Anti-Apartheid Movement, led by Huddleston, launches a boycott against Simon over the township music-inspired album Graceland.
Masekela sees music as a weapon in the struggle. He joins forces with Makeba to create the Graceland band, a supergroup designed to take South Africa’s voice to the world.
The film will feature music connected to Masekela, Makeba and Simon. According to the release, it is a story about defiance, sacrifice and resilience.
Production Team
The Road Home is produced by Laura Bickford, Michael Bronner, Greg Yolen and Anant Singh. It is produced in association with Blue Ice producers Tebogo Maila and Adam Friedlander.
Executive producers include Fiona Druckenmiller, Rametsi, the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, David Dison and South African broadcast journalist Siphiwo Ralo.
Veteran music producer Hilton Rosenthal is a co-producer and will produce new recordings from the catalogues of Masekela and Makeba for the film’s soundtrack.
StudioCanal is financing the film with Flora Films and Rob Bath. Palisades Park Pictures is handling international sales for the rest of the world.
