WHAT’S ON TODAY?
Sunday brings with it three more group games as 2019 finalists Netherlands begin their 2023 campaign against a team making their tournament debut.
Sweden v South Africa (3pm AEST)
After finishing third in 2019, Sweden will be desperate to move their way up the podium this year.
They’ll open their tournament against a South Africa side that are only playing in their second Women’s World Cup.
The Banyana Banyana loom as potential wildcards in 2023 but may find Sweden too strong on Sunday in Wellington.
Netherlands v Portugal (5.30pm AEST)
Four years on from losing the Women’s World Cup final against the USA, the Netherlands will start another tournament hungry for redemption.
That could mean trouble for debutants Portugal, who only qualified for the tournament via a series of play-offs.
But the Dutch can’t take the debutants lightly with Portugal holding England to a 0-0 draw earlier this month.
France v Jamaica (8pm AEST)
The final match of the day will take place in Sydney as 2019 Women’s World Cup hosts France will be hoping to claim a convincing win against Jamaica.
Drawn in a competitive Group F alongside Brazil and Panama, a strong start is vital and the French loom as favourites in this one.
Jamaica only managed to score one goal in their first Women’s World Cup appearance four years ago and will be eager to show more this time around.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Caroline Seger (Sweden)
With over 200 international caps to her name, Seger is the definition of a veteran and is the beating heart of this Sweden team.
She played a key role in 2019 when Sweden finished third and despite now being 38, she’s showing few signs of slowing down.
Lieke Martens (Netherlands)
After battling through injury at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Martens will be eager to perform at her best this time around.
Despite not being fully fit four years ago, the PSG midfielder was still a key player for the Dutch and has only grown in importance over recent years.
Khadija Shaw (Jamaica)
If Jamaica hope to do any damage at this tournament, they’ll likely do it via Shaw.
A WSL star that scored 31 goals for Manchester City last season across all competitions, the 26-year-old looks ready to explode on the international stage.
Shaw has scored a stunning 55 goals from just 38 appearances for Jamaica and you’d be brave to bet against her not netting over the next month.
