Lachlan Kennedy breaks national record in Glasgow 2026 silver medal run – Lachlan Kennedy has broken the Australian men’s 100m national record, running 9.85 seconds to win silver at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The performance aired during Seven’s Games coverage, with Bruce McAvaney and Tamsyn Manou on commentary and Jason Richardson speaking with Kennedy in the mixed zone after the race.
For Australian viewers, the result is another major sprinting moment at Glasgow 2026. Coming after Torrie Lewis’ historic sub-11-second run, Kennedy’s national record gives Seven and 7plus Sport a huge athletics storyline around Australia’s growing sprint depth.
Kennedy reacts to 9.85
Kennedy told Richardson he initially thought he had won, but said he could not complain after delivering a national record and a Commonwealth Games silver medal.
He said it was an honour to show that Australia has what it takes in men’s sprinting, thanking the crowd in Glasgow and supporters back home.
Asked whether he believed he could produce that time, Kennedy said he thought he could win, but described 9.85 as an extraordinary result and said there was still more in the tank.
A new benchmark for Australian sprinting
Kennedy’s run adds to a breakthrough Games for Australian athletics. His silver medal and national record also place him at the centre of one of the biggest Australian track stories of Glasgow 2026.
The result followed a fast semi-final, after which Kennedy posted that the job was not finished. Speaking after the final, he confirmed that message had come from him while scrolling between races.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continues nightly from 7.00pm on Seven and 7plus Sport.
