ACMA Update Should be Red Flag for Government – Screen Producers Australia (SPA) today welcomed the release of the ACMA’s new research into current trends and developments in the Australian media and communications sectors, which shows a continued shift away from traditional live TV services, with more Australians than ever using streaming services for video and audio content.
“This research highlights that Australian audiences are increasingly moving to online platforms with a record 91% having used an online service, paid or free, to watch video content in a given week,”
– said SPA CEO Matthew Deaner.
“While live free-to-air TV will always play an important role for Australian audiences, we are seeing a tipping point towards free-to-air streaming (or BVOD) services and less than half of Australians watching live free-to-air TV for the first time.
“When considering future Government plans to regulate online video platforms, SPA has long advocated for this regulation to cover all services delivered online, not just looking at streaming video on demand (SVOD) platforms. This is particularly true as more streamers incorporate advertising video-on-demand (AVOD) options.
“It is important for the Australian Government to recognise these audience trends and to adapt regulatory thinking accordingly. Any local content rules put forward need to be ‘future proof’ to capture the full impact of technology on audience behaviour,”
– said Mr Deaner.
