MOVIE REVIEW | Smurfs – Blue is back and better than ever. Smurfs (2025) isn’t just a nostalgic return to a beloved franchise — it’s a smart, emotionally layered, and visually stunning film that appeals to both longtime fans and a whole new generation.

The story kicks off when the wise and caring Papa Smurf is kidnapped by the notorious Gargamel and his equally sinister brother Razamel. In a bold move that propels the film into uncharted territory, Smurfette steps up to lead her fellow Smurfs on a daring mission into the real world to rescue their leader. Along the way, they form unexpected alliances, uncover long-buried truths, and explore the meaning of destiny — not just for themselves, but for the universe at large.

What sets this Smurfs film apart is its balance of humour, heart, and high-stakes adventure. With a nod to Wicked in its exploration of moral ambiguity, the plot dives into the complexities of good vs. evil, showing that even in enchanted forests, things aren’t always black and white.

The voice cast is a standout — featuring some of Hollywood’s brightest talents, who inject each scene with charisma and emotional weight.

From laugh-out-loud moments to genuinely moving beats, the performances breathe new life into these iconic characters.

Visually, Smurfs (2025) is a triumph. The animation is rich, dynamic, and full of colour, perfectly capturing the whimsy of the Smurfs’ world while blending it seamlessly with real-world elements. The pacing never drags, and the screenplay cleverly weaves in humour that’s accessible for kids while offering deeper thematic elements for adults.

Whether you’re a die-hard Smurfs fan or meeting the blue crew for the first time, this film offers a compelling story filled with adventure, emotion, and surprises. It’s a lovingly crafted tribute to the franchise that also paves the way for an exciting future.

Pro tip: Don’t leave when the credits roll. The post-credit scene teases even more magical mischief to come — and trust us, you’ll want to see what’s next.

Verdict: Smurfs (2025) is a delightful, thoughtful reinvention with something for everyone — a bold, blue blockbuster with brains and heart.
