MOVIE REVIEW | IF in cinemas now

IF is the first 10/10 movie of 2024, expertly tapping into every emotional chord to showcase the joy and pain of childhood, loss, and family.

The story follows 12-year-old Bea, who moves into her grandmother Margaret’s apartment in New York while her father awaits heart surgery in the same hospital where her mother died of cancer years earlier. One night, while out buying a charger for her mother’s old camcorder, Bea encounters a strange creature and follows it back to her grandmother’s building.

Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski excel in their roles, but it’s young actress Cailey Fleming who truly steals the show as Bea.

The film’s imaginary friends (IFs) bring a continuous 104-minute smile to your face, even as you might find yourself crying during some deeply poignant moments.

The voice cast features a star-studded lineup of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Steve Carell, Louis Gossett Jr., Awkwafina, Emily Blunt, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon, Christopher Meloni, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Amy Schumer, Jon Stewart, and Brad Pitt.

There’s nothing to criticize about this movie—the voice cast, the plot, the CGI, the emotional depth, and the lead performances all hit the mark perfectly, earning this film a well-deserved 10/10 from both reviewers.
