Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

Six-time Olympian Stuart O’Grady on Australia’s golden morning in the velodrome with the Aussies winning the Men’s Team Pursuit title for the first time since 2004, defeating Great Britain.

(Clip here)

“This is huge for Australian cycling. They have been knocking on the door for a while. The first Team Pursuit Gold in 20 years. They were empty after it, could barely talk. So good for the sport. This is magnificent. This was one of the closest Team Pursuit Finals in history. We lost Kelland O’Brien again fairly early on, 2300m that’s a long way to go to the finish, but that’s the same time the British rider peeled off so with 1500m to go three riders battling it out, you can see Tim Decker the coach – coach extraordinaire – stressed off his head. It was an absolute nail-biter and it just kept swinging 0.1 second, 0.2 second, you didn’t know which way it was going to fall and at the end it was down to who wanted this Gold Medal the most.”

Stuart O’Grady takes us through more Track Cycling and how the Keirin works with Australia’s Kristina Conan coming up tomorrow morning in the Women’s event and shares his thoughts on Matt Richardson’s brief World Record in the Qualifying of the Individual Sprint.

“Six laps – these are the 100m runners of the track sprinting game. The rider who is on the front pretty much sits on the back of the motor bike and then it peels off with about two and a half laps to go and then it’s a free for all. It’s normally pretty dangerous, there are usually some accidents, a lot of bumping along the way. First few riders go into the next round. Kristina is through the repechage into the next Round and doing well.”

“What a ride Matt had last night in the Sprint. After the Team Sprint he had confidence and he got a new World Record, albeit for about a minute and a half, which is amazing. It was eclipsed by .01 in the next ride but looking forward to Matty on his next ride.”

Two-time Olympian Jordan Wood previews our Kayak 4 500m Men’s and Women’s Crews as they kick off their Semi-Final campaigns.

“Coming out of that Quarter-Final and setting that Olympic best time was phenomenal [for our men], and they should definitely take that time, that result and the execution of that race and put it towards that Semi which will just be another refinement of their race plan. They will really push it, but they’re looking good. Their main competition is going to come from the Serbian and Spanish crews, but going into it with the Olympic Record time should do wonders for their confidence. I look forward to watching and seeing what they can do.”

“The [women’s] main competition is going to come from Serbia and Norway, but I think the Aussie women have them covered. I can’t wait to see what they can execute tomorrow in the Semi-Final.”

Four-time Olympian Shane Heal on the Opals Basketball Team as they progress through to the Semi-Finals and now face the USA.

“They were way too good. They’ve come into some domination after starting the tournament really poorly. We also spoke about their lack of preparation beforehand and it looked like it in the first few games but since then they have put the foot down and they are on fire.”

“This is what it’s all about, you have to blood some of the young players to give them experience and [Jade Melbourne, 19-points] really struggled in the first couple of games. All superstars go through that. She’s a young player of the future. She came out and played with a whole lot of confidence, she’s got through those difficult times and playing some really good basketball. She’s a big part of this Opals campaign to try and win a medal.”

2016 German Gold Medallist Thomas Rohler talks about Kathryn Mitchell and Mackenzie Little who have made it through to the Women’s Javelin Throw Final on Sunday morning.

“Looking back at the season they have done an amazing job in the Diamond Leagues, Mackenzie always showed up great and in good form. She can fight for a medal. For Kathryn, it’s just amazing to see, she’s more grown up already and an experienced athlete and it’s great to see her qualify for the Final.”

Two time Olympian Nova Peris on Australian Nina Kennedy winning Gold in the Women’s Pole Vault, becoming the first Australian woman to ever win an Olympic Field event.

(Clip here)

“It was brilliant. We’ve sat here and spoken about her in the lead up to this, four competitions undefeated. She came in with nerves of steel, she was composed, contained her confidence. She was joint winner with American Katie Moon last year at World Championships and she has got this one in the bag on her own now. She is our undisputed track and field golden girl.”

Nova Peris on Jemima Montag winning her second medal in the Mixed Team Walk with Rhydian Cowley.

“Jemima who earlier won an individual Bronze in the 20km Walk and won Bronze with Rhydian Cowley in the Mixed Team Walk – she now joins Betty Cuthbert, Raelyne Boyle, Marjorie Jackson and Shirley Strickland as the only Australian women to have won two Medals at an Olympic Games in the Track and Field. So we have gone from the 70’s to now we have a modern day two-time medallist at an Olympic Games.”

Nova Peris looks at Australia’s chances in the blue ribbon 4 x 100m relay events as the Semi-Finals kick off tonight.

“The men are interesting as the team that qualified was Caleb Law, Josh Azzopardi, Jacob Despard and Sebastian Sultana. Josh ran in the Men’s 100m and did a 10.20, Rohan Browning in the Heats ran 10.29. It is up to the selectors, it is an unpleasant thing. Caleb Law did a personal best in the Heats of the 200m, he made it through to the repechage but he withdrew to concentrate on the 4 x 100, that’s how much these boys believe in themselves. They are not far off breaking the 100m Australian Record. Australia are ranked fifth going into it however 0.30 separates third, fourth and fifth. You want the best team, the team that has been training. We will have to wait and see what happens.”

“I am really excited about the women. Australia has drawn lane five, we have broken the Australian Record three times this year … And this is the first time in 24 years since the Australian 4 x 100m girls have made the Olympics so I am excited and I think we can make the Final. The girls have jelled – it can be hard to bring fast people with egos into it so fingers crossed they can continue with their form.”

Nova Peris on the upcoming Men’s 200m Final and American Noah Lyles plan to take out the 100m and 200m double tomorrow morning.

“I really look forward to an extraordinary race. You have a new era of men coming through. Two from the USA and two from Zimbawe, the remainder from African nations and no Jamaicans. Noah Lyles has conserved himself, he was content with second in the Semi-Final but he is going after the 100-200 double. Kenneth Bednereck came second to Noah at Trials and they’re not far off each other so “Bandana Kenny” as they call him, ran so well in the Semi-Final, it is not going to be [quite] in the bag for Noah.”

Former Hockeyroo and Olympian Nova Peris looks at the Women’s Hockey draw and China breaking through with their sights on Gold with Australian former coach Alison Annan at the helm.

“Alison Annan came into the Olympics, and she said China could win a medal. So, if Alison Annan says it, she’s a four-time Olympian, two-time Olympic Gold Medallist, she took the Netherlands to a golden era, now she has taken on the China team. Yes she is my countrywoman, a fellow Hockeyroo, but in life you should be pleased for people that can achieve great things and look what she has done with this Chinese team. They finished fourth behind our Aussies in the Pool and now they’re going for Gold, and they have the inside knowledge on the Dutch knowing Alison’s work.”

“I feel for Australia in many ways and Trinny [Katrina Powell] has been formidable since she took the reins a couple of months out from the Tokyo Olympics, they were coach less for a while and then Trinny took them on. She did well, they won a World Bronze Medal under her, but I have heard that Alison has yearned to come back to Australia over the years…she’s coaching China now so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
