SBS scores biggest ever FIFA World Cup reach as Spain win final — SBS says its FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage has delivered the broadcaster’s biggest ever World Cup reach, with Spain’s final victory over Argentina drawing a Total TV reach of 5.26 million Australians on Monday morning.
The final, which Spain won 1-0, became the most-watched FIFA World Cup match in SBS history. It passed the Socceroos’ final group match against Paraguay, which reached 4.87 million viewers.
The result matters beyond one match. SBS has carried the FIFA World Cup for four decades, and the 2026 tournament has again shown why live football remains one of the strongest national TV and streaming events in Australia.
Record Reach For SBS
Across the tournament, cumulative Total TV reach has now hit 18.04 million. SBS says that means 64% of Australia’s population has watched some of the World Cup.
Total consumption has passed 209 million hours. SBS also says 17 matches have reached more than two million viewers, including four matches above four million.
The Spain v Argentina final had a Total TV average audience of 2.69 million. More than 56.5% of viewing came through SBS On Demand.
The post-match coverage also delivered a major audience. It reached 3.70 million and became the second most-watched program of the day.
Third-Place Match Also Draws A Crowd
Sunday morning’s third-place match also performed strongly. England’s 6-4 win over France reached 2.77 million viewers and had an average audience of 1.41 million.
According to SBS, World Cup matches have consistently ranked inside the top 10 programs of the day since the tournament began on 12 June, Australian time.
The broadcaster also says the World Cup has ranked No. 1 on the VOZ daily ratings in the 16 to 39 age group throughout the tournament.
Ken Shipp On The World Cup Result
SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp said the 2026 tournament had delivered unprecedented engagement for the broadcaster.
“In our 40 years of broadcasting the tournament, we’ve never seen engagement at this level,” Shipp said.
Shipp said the Socceroos helped capture national attention, but viewers stayed with the tournament through to Spain’s final win.
“Throughout the past six weeks, we saw football’s unique ability to bring people together and celebrate the many cultures and communities that make our country so diverse,” Shipp said.
