Movie Review | Late Night with the Devil in cinemas 11 April

Late Night with the Devil – It’s 31 October, 1977. Johnny Carson rival, Jack Delroy, is the host of ‘Night Owls’, a once hugely popular syndicated talk show.

A year on from the tragic death of Jack’s wife, ratings have plummeted, and sponsors are getting nervous. Desperate to turn his fortunes around, Jack pulls out all the stops for his annual Halloween special, booking a psychic, a professional skeptic, a parapsychologist and a young girl allegedly possessed by the devil… What could possibly go wrong?

Writer-director duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes craft a suspenseful narrative that unfolds mostly in real time, as the ‘Night Owls’ broadcast makes surprising turns from the amusing to the bizarre to the deliciously sinister.

In his first major lead role, Dastmalchian brings compelling charisma and gravitas to the character of Jack Delroy. At its core Late Night With The Devil is a tale about the cult of personality and the price of fame…with plenty of supernatural thrills along the way.

The film has an excellent premise and this reviewer would have rated it higher with the last 15 minutes taken out.

The film alludes to a back story involving Jack and his wife and something that happened ‘between the trees’ at a camping spot.

The movie moves from chilling, scary and intriguing to a mystical, confusing and what feels like an unnecessary type ending to the film.

Late Night with the Devil

Aaron: 5 / 10 “Dastmalchian was a fabulous lead but a confusing mystical over the top ending ruined what was a great film”

Zak: 4 / 10 “Potentially good movie let down by an overly unnecessarily complicated ending”

Cinema Experience:

Luna is a very old styled cinema, so the old fashioned chairs are still in place. The Candy Bar selections are more expansive and less expensive than the major chains. It was disappointing that even though they had numbers for the premiere screening, extra staff were not put on at the Candy Bar, leading to very large queues.
