Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals To World Premiere At Melbourne Documentary Film Festival – A new Australian documentary exploring the bond between humans and animals will make its world premiere next month, with Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals set to debut at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival (MDFF) on July 11.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker M. Zournazi, the documentary examines the tenderness and tragedies shared between humans and animals, embarking on a journey through the lives of abandoned cats and other animals in Greece, Australia and around the world.
The film shines a light on both the compassion and cruelty that humans can inflict on animals and each other, while posing broader questions about truth, freedom and humanity in a rapidly changing world.
The Melbourne Documentary Film Festival will also showcase Zournazi’s previous documentaries, Dogs of Democracy and My Rembetika Blues, as part of a special retrospective celebrating her work and completing what has become known as her ‘Greek Trilogy’.
Speaking ahead of the premiere, M. Zournazi said the documentary is ultimately about connection and empathy.
“I’m excited to show this new film as a part of my Greek Trilogy at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals is a film about love, tenderness and cruelty and puts a spotlight on humans and animals, what connects us to each other and the world. It’s a small step towards remembering our humanity in these times.”
Zournazi is no stranger to international acclaim. Her previous documentary, Dogs of Democracy, won Best Documentary at the Imagine This Women’s International Film Festival, along with The Directors’ Choice Award at the Social Justice Film Festival and the Spirit of Activism Award at the Nevada Women’s Film Festival.
Beyond documentary filmmaking, Zournazi also co-wrote the Australian road movie The Cousins alongside Man Booker Prize nominee Christos Tsiolkas. The project is currently in pre-production. She is also the author of several books, including Inventing Peace, co-authored with acclaimed German filmmaker Wim Wenders.
Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals will have its world premiere at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on Friday, 11 July.
