Q+A on ABC and ABC iview S17E21 profiles US election – Got a burning question for our panel? Submit your questions via our website.
It’s the tightest and most contentious election in recent United States history. And the stakes for allies like Australia couldn’t be higher.
On election eve, Q+A asks what America – and Australia – might look like with Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the White House.
The Democrat offers continuity and diplomatic norms in a pitch that has failed to spark key voters; the Republican promises a trade war that could cruel Australian industries – while dodging questions on if he’ll accept the result.
The campaign has been deeply polarising, with voters on both sides trapped in feedback loops that have entrenched division. Gender has been a significant split: a recent Harvard poll shows younger men are solidly behind Trump while young women lean to Harris. This week, Trump faced backlash from a key voting bloc after a comedian at his rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage”, while Harris is distancing herself from Joe Biden who appeared to describe Trump supporters as “garbage”.
Polls show the contest is neck-and-neck in the swing states that matter. Who will win? What will America look like the day after? And how will a new president reshape alliances and global business and security?
