The Batman Part II: Steven Soderbergh steps in to help finish filming — Steven Soderbergh will help complete The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter, Variety reported. Soderbergh will work on the final weeks of principal photography with the full support of DC Studios.

Reeves remains the film’s writer and director. According to the studio, the two filmmakers will work together to deliver Reeves’ version of the film.

Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.

Studio statement

For Australian cinema-goers, the film is still set for release on 18 February 2028. Warner Bros. set that date in July, after the sequel had already moved twice.

Why Soderbergh is involved

Warner Bros. and DC Studios paused production in early October. At the time, the studio said Reeves was focusing on a family matter and had its full support.

Soderbergh then approached Reeves as an admirer of his work. In a statement, he praised the original film.

I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent.

He added that his aim was to help Reeves and his team “generate footage that will integrate seamlessly” with what the team has already filmed.

Who returns for The Batman Part II

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman. The cast also includes Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, along with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan.

In addition, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch have joined the sequel. The studio has not revealed their roles.

A long road to cinemas

Warner Bros. announced the sequel at CinemaCon in 2022, the same year Reeves’ The Batman reached cinemas. The studio first dated it for October 2026. It then moved to October 2027, before shifting again to February 2028.

Soderbergh is an Oscar-winning director. His films include Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Ocean’s Eleven. More recently, he made Presence and Black Bag.
