True Detective season 5: Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas confirmed to star — True Detective season 5 has its leads. Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will headline the next chapter of HBO’s crime anthology, TVLine reported. The Hollywood Reporter and Empire have also reported the casting.
Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas will play Rai García. HBO has not released any further plot or character details. However, production is due to begin next year.
For Australian viewers, all earlier seasons of True Detective are available to stream on HBO Max, as well as BINGE and Foxtel Now. HBO has not yet announced Australian release details for season 5.
Issa López returns as showrunner
Issa López returns to run season 5. She wrote and directed season 4, True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
That season was a major success for the anthology. In fact, Foster won the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series for her role as Liz Danvers. In Australia, Night Country premiered on BINGE in January 2024.
Nic Pizzolatto created True Detective and oversaw its first three seasons. The original 2014 season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. López took over the series from Pizzolatto for Night Country.
What we know about the new season
Cage was first reported to be in talks for the role last year. At the time, reports described Henry Logan as a New York detective. They also said the season would be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York.
HBO has not confirmed the setting or the story, though. As a result, details about how Logan and García are connected remain under wraps.
Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas
Cage won the Academy Award for best actor for Leaving Las Vegas. His other films include Moonstruck, Con Air and National Treasure. Most recently, he played the title role in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, which ended after one season.
Banderas is best known for Desperado and The Mask of Zorro. He also voices Puss in Boots in the Shrek films. On television, he earned Emmy nominations for HBO’s And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself and for playing Pablo Picasso in Genius: Picasso.
