Above the Below trailer: Idris Elba’s thriller opens in Australia 3 December – The first Australian trailer and poster have arrived for Above the Below, a survival thriller that sends three astronauts from a disaster in space into another emergency beneath the ocean. STUDIOCANAL will release the film in Australian cinemas on 3 December 2026.
For Australian moviegoers, the new date and trailer confirm a theatrical release rather than a streaming debut. The premise gives the crew no time to recover from its return to Earth: after an unscheduled crash-landing, the spacecraft is trapped at depth, contact with mission control is lost and oxygen is running out.

The trailer introduces a race in which every breath matters. With no immediate way to reach the surface or call for help, the three survivors must deal with mounting dangers and make difficult choices under pressure. The shift from a space mission to the crushing depths of the ocean is the film’s central survival hook.
Idris Elba co-directs and stars
Idris Elba co-directs Above the Below with Martin Owen and leads the cast alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Elba’s dual role puts him both behind the camera and inside the stranded crew’s ordeal.
The screenplay is by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell and Vicki Sargent. Matt Williams and Gina Carter are the producers. STUDIOCANAL’s newly released Australian poster places Elba inside an astronaut’s helmet, with space on one side and a rush of water on the other, reflecting the two environments at the heart of the film.
Above the Below opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 3 December 2026.
