AFL finals audiences surge on Channel 7 and 7plus Sport ahead of Grand Final – Seven says its coverage of the 2026 AFL Finals has reached 9.1 million people across Channel 7 and 7plus Sport. The series averaged a national total TV audience of 1.12 million, up 9 per cent from 1.03 million for the 2025 finals, as the broadcaster heads into Grand Final week.
The increase is especially pronounced online. Seven puts the average audience on 7plus Sport at 209,000, compared with 129,000 a year earlier, a rise of 62 per cent. The figures show how the broadcaster’s live and free AFL rights now span both its traditional channel and streaming service. They are Seven’s reported audience numbers, rather than an independent forecast of the Grand Final audience.
Across the broader 2026 premiership season, from 5 March to the preliminary final on 19 September, Seven says its AFL coverage reached 17.25 million Australians. It compares that total with the NRL season so far, saying AFL reached 2.18 million more viewers, or 14 per cent more, over the period it measured. Those are season-to-date reach figures and should not be confused with the average audience for a single match.
Fremantle–Sydney leads the finals audiences
Friday 18 September’s Fremantle Dockers–Sydney Swans preliminary final was Seven’s biggest AFL match of the year to that point. It reached 3.73 million people nationally and averaged 1.59 million. Seven says that average was 21 per cent higher than the comparable match last year.
The same fixture attracted an average 308,000 viewers on 7plus Sport, which Seven describes as its highest AFL streaming audience of 2026. On Saturday 19 September, Brisbane Lions against Hawthorn reached 3.35 million and averaged 1.48 million. Together, the two preliminary finals brought large audiences to both the broadcast and streaming coverage.
Seven says every finals match has led its timeslot among viewers aged 25 to 54, viewers aged 16 to 39 and grocery shoppers. The broadcaster has a commercial interest in highlighting those groups, but the figures explain why it is foregrounding AFL in its closing week of programming and advertising.
The ten biggest Channel 7 AFL matches of 2026
Seven’s release lists the ten matches with the largest national reach across its coverage. Reach counts the number of people who watched some of a telecast, while the average audience reflects simultaneous viewing across the broadcast.
| Match | National reach | Average audience |
|---|---|---|
| Fremantle v Sydney, 18 September | 3.73 million | 1.59 million |
| Brisbane v Hawthorn, 19 September | 3.35 million | 1.48 million |
| Geelong v Carlton, 4 September | 2.81 million | 1.08 million |
| Fremantle v Geelong, 11 September | 2.66 million | 1.20 million |
| Fremantle v Hawthorn, 3 September | 2.55 million | 1.09 million |
| Western Bulldogs v Collingwood, 28 August | 2.54 million | 966,000 |
| Brisbane v Adelaide, 12 September | 2.50 million | 975,000 |
| Adelaide v Western Bulldogs, 5 September | 2.36 million | 960,000 |
| Melbourne v Carlton, 29 August | 2.21 million | 894,000 |
| Sydney v Brisbane, 5 September | 2.06 million | 786,000 |
The figures also show the difference between a single blockbuster and the depth of the schedule. The two preliminary finals are out in front, yet eight other matches reached more than two million people. That spread is important to Seven’s case that finals football delivers audiences throughout the series, not only on Grand Final day.
Streaming is part of that picture, but the release does not break out a separate 7plus average for every match in the table. The specific 308,000 figure applies to the Fremantle–Sydney preliminary final.
Grand Final week on Channel 7
Fremantle will meet Brisbane in the Grand Final. The Dockers are seeking a first premiership in their second Grand Final appearance. The Lions are preparing for a fourth consecutive Grand Final and an opportunity for a third straight flag. That match-up brings a new potential champion into contact with a side pursuing a rare run of titles.
Seven has built a week of AFL programming around the match. The Brownlow Medal airs on Monday, followed by The Agenda Setters on Tuesday. Wednesday brings Centimetre Perfect, a Dennis Cometti documentary. AFLW and The Front Bar feature on Thursday, with more AFLW on Friday.
Grand Final Saturday is 26 September. Channel 7’s day starts with Weekend Sunrise from the MCG at 7am AEST. Seven says its football experts then join the coverage from 9am. The Grand Final will be shown live and free on Channel 7 and 7plus Sport. Viewers should check local listings for the full run of coverage around the match.
Seven’s Head of AFL and Sport Innovation, Gary O’Keeffe, credits the network’s production and commentary teams for the finals coverage. Sales executive Katie Finney highlights the combination of broadcast reach and streaming growth. Both comments reflect Seven’s view of the season, and its numbers make clear why the broadcaster is treating the final week as a major programming event.
For viewers, the practical point is straightforward: the match, its build-up and Seven’s companion shows sit across the free-to-air channel and 7plus Sport. The audience data adds a second story, showing how much of the finals audience is now arriving through streaming as well as television.
