Cyclone Tracy: 50 Years On – A Matt Cunningham Documentary Premieres on Sky News – Sky News will premiere a special commemorative documentary, Cyclone Tracy: 50 Years On, hosted by award-winning journalist and Sky News Northern Australia Correspondent Matt Cunningham on Wednesday 27 November at 8pm AEDT.
It was the early hours of Christmas Day 1974, a day usually filled with joy and celebration. Instead, it brought chaos and destruction as tropical Cyclone Tracy, one of Australia’s most catastrophic natural disasters, tore through Darwin killing 66 people, devastating the city, and leaving thousands of residents homeless.
As Darwin and the nation mark 50 years since the tragic event, Matt unearths never-before-seen footage of Tracy’s carnage alongside harrowing eyewitness accounts from those who survived Australia’s most destructive cyclone, recalling the remarkable resilience and tenacity that inspired the re-birth of a city with an unbreakable spirit.
Matt Cunningham said:
“It’s clear the trauma of Cyclone Tracy is still very real for so many survivors. But this is also a story of resilience and hope, of how Darwin rose from the wreckage to rebuild the modern, vibrant city that exists today.
“Fifty years on, it’s a story Australia must remember.”
