My Kitchen Rules recap: Angus and Simon score 55 on Channel 7 – South Australian best mates Angus and Simon finished their Last Orders Instant Restaurant on 55 points after three courses failed to match their confident talk. The result puts them just one point above Alisha and Deanne at the foot of the My Kitchen Rules table.

The gap matters because only Zoe and Zac remain to cook in this round. The lowest-scoring team will be eliminated once their Newcastle restaurant has been judged. Angus and Simon are still in the competition, but their score of 55 leaves little room for comfort.

After scoring 70 in their first Instant Restaurant, the pair returned to Last Orders hoping to back up their big claims with bold flavours. They served duck and shiitake dumplings, lamb cutlets, then bread and butter pudding.

Dumplings start strongly despite a few flaws

The Duck and Shiitake Dumplings came with Orange and Anise Sauce. Some dumplings were heavily charred, and the filling needed work. However, Manu Feildel praised the sauce for its balance and acidity. He told the team:

I loved the sauce; I think it was well balanced. It had a good amount of acidity,

Manu and fellow judge Colin Fassnidge each gave the entrée seven out of ten. It proved to be the pair’s strongest course.

Zoe confronts Simon before the main

The tension from the previous restaurant followed the cooks into their kitchen. Encouraged by Alisha and Deanne, Zoe walked in to confront Simon over his earlier comments about her. She asked him to apologise. Simon, flustered by the visit, agreed to return to the matter after dessert, and the two shook hands.

Meanwhile, Angus and Simon prepared Lamb Cutlets with Nam Jim Jaew and a Pickled Salad. The lamb itself was cooked well, but the extras did not come together for the judges. Manu liked the balance of the Nam Jim Jaew yet questioned how it fitted the dish. Colin found the pickled salad and pineapple muddled. Both judges scored the main five.

Dessert brought another setback. The homemade bread was too heavy to absorb the custard, leaving the individual Bread and Butter Puddings dry and dense. Colin enjoyed the Black Sesame Ice Cream, but he scored the course four. Manu gave it three.

The guest teams contributed 24 out of 50. Combined with 31 out of 60 from the judges, Angus and Simon ended the night on 55 out of 110. They finished one point clear of Alisha and Deanne, who had scored 54 at Hot Mess.

Simon struggled to find words after the score was announced:

Very rare for me to not have words at the moment,

Simon, My Kitchen Rules contestant

Manu summed up the judges’ view:

You over-promised and under-delivered, gentlemen; you’re very lucky to still be in a competition right now.
