Tom Cruise leads Digger world premiere at London’s Royal Film Performance – Tom Cruise and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu brought Digger to London for its world premiere, ahead of the film’s arrival in Australian cinemas on 1 October 2026.
The event took place at Leicester Square on Tuesday night as the Royal Film Performance. The Prince and Princess of Wales attended alongside the film’s cast and creative team.
The London launch gives Digger a high-profile final step on its way to Australian screens. It also connected the premiere with a long-running industry fundraiser, rather than staging it as a standard red-carpet event.
Digger stars gather in London
Cruise and Iñárritu were joined by Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Together, they introduced a large ensemble film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.
The wider cast also includes Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy and Burn Gorman. The premiere photographs place the actors and filmmakers against the film’s distinctive orange-and-white branding, giving the night the scale of a major international launch.
For Cruise, the film marks a collaboration with Iñárritu outside the long-running action franchises with which the actor is most closely associated. The project instead centres on an original character facing the consequences of a catastrophe of his own making.
A Royal Film Performance for the Film and TV Charity
The world premiere doubled as the Royal Film Performance, the flagship fundraising event for the Film and TV Charity. The organisation supports people working behind the scenes across the United Kingdom’s film, television and cinema sectors.
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, attended the event and were photographed with Iñárritu and Cruise. Their appearance reinforced the charitable focus of the evening while adding to the international attention around the film.
What is Digger about?
Digger follows the most powerful man in the world as he embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s saviour. His effort comes after he unleashes a disaster that threatens to destroy everything.
The premise puts Cruise at the centre of a story about power, responsibility and self-preservation. The official synopsis keeps the exact shape of the disaster under wraps, leaving the character’s response — and the consequences of his decisions — as the driving questions.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu and the Digger creative team
Iñárritu directed the film from a screenplay credited to Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman. The story is by Iñárritu and Berman.
Iñárritu, Mary Parent, Cruise and Michael Sharp serve as producers. Joshua Grode, Berman, Dinelaris, Giacobone, Jez Butterworth and Emmanuel Lubezki are executive producers.
Lubezki also worked as the film’s director of photography. The production was shot entirely in VistaVision, a large-format process designed to capture a wide, highly detailed image.
The crew includes editors Conor O’Neill and Stephen Mirrione, costume designer Jacqueline West, and makeup and hair designer Alessandro Bertolazzi. Francine Maisler handled casting, while Dennis Gassner and Richard Johnson led the production design.
Kazu Hiro designed the prosthetic makeup, and Cosmo Sheldrake composed the music. The combination brings several frequent awards-season names into an original film whose scale extends from its cast to its technical presentation.
When does Digger open in Australia?
Digger opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 1 October 2026. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the film.
