Live-action Moana streams on Disney+ from October 21 – Disney’s live-action Moana will join Disney+ in Australia on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. Catherine Lagaʻaia plays the title character and Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui in the new version of the ocean adventure.
In addition, the date gives Australian families a subscription-streaming option for the film after its cinema run and home-viewing release. TV Central previously covered Moana among the films available to buy or rent digitally; this announcement is specifically about its Disney+ debut.
Meanwhile, the new film retells Moana’s first voyage beyond the reef of Motunui. She joins Maui on a journey to restore prosperity to her people, bringing the original animated story’s music and wayfinding adventure into live action.
What to expect from Moana on Disney+
For its streaming debut, Disney is positioning the release as a family movie-night title. Alongside Lagaʻaia and Johnson, the story again features Moana’s bond with her people and her determination to answer the ocean’s call. Songs highlighted for this version include “How Far I’ll Go” and “I Am Moana”, plus the new number “Along The Way”.
According to Disney, the animated original has accumulated more than 1.5 billion hours streamed globally on Disney+. That figure is worldwide, not an Australian audience result. As a result, the live-action release gives viewers who know the animated film a way to compare the two versions on the same service.
Cast and creative team
Lagaʻaia leads the cast as Moana. Johnson reprises Maui, whom he voiced in the animated films. John Tui plays Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams plays her mother, Sina; and Rena Owen appears as Gramma Tala.
Behind the camera, Thomas Kail directed the film. Its producers are Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho are executive producers. Cravalho voiced Moana in the original animated feature and Moana 2.
