Binge Upfront 2027: Tough Love begins production on BINGE with Miranda Otto and Rick Donald – Production has started in Sydney on Tough Love, a new Australian original comedy series for BINGE starring Miranda Otto and Rick Donald, as part of Binge Upfront 2027.
The new series continues BINGE’s push into local scripted comedy after the success of Colin from Accounts. It also reunites the streamer with directors Trent O’Donnell and Madeleine Dyer, who helped shape that breakout Australian comedy.
Created by Donald, Tough Love follows Kerry Hart, played by Otto, after a cancer diagnosis leaves her determined to prepare her three adult children for life without her.
Cast And Story
Donald plays Kerry’s 39-year-old son Shane. Liz Kingsman plays daughter Steph, Hugo Johnston-Burt plays middle son Rodney and Jay Ryan plays Steph’s partner Mick.
The family comedy is set in suburban Australia and explores love, loss, dependence, resilience and the messy process of learning to become self-sufficient.
Donald said the show draws on observations of family and the funny, difficult ways people look after those they love. The release describes the series as sharp, heartfelt and chaotic.
