AUSSIES IN ACTION – DAY 6
Para Athletics
- James Turner delivered a near-perfect race in the Men’s T36 400m Final to win Gold and break the World Record he set in Dubai nearly five years ago. (vision here)
- Jaryd Clifford has had another luckless run in Paris, this time in the Men’s T13 1500m Final. Clifford was denied a Bronze medal in the 5000m earlier in the week after dropping his tether a metre out from the finish, this time he was edged into fourth by just 0.01s despite being just over half a second from Gold. - After her Bronze medal in the 5000m, Madi de Rozario finished fifth in the Women’s T54 1500m Final and now sets her sights on the Marathon. The event was taken out by Swiss Catherine Debrunner who added to her Golds in the 5000m and 800m with the 100m still on her program. (vision here)
- Sixteen-year-old schoolgirl Telaya Blacksmith has put the world on notice after qualifying for the Women’s T20 400m Final, finishing eighth on her Paralympic debut. (vision here)
Para Swimming
- Alex Saffy set a new Oceania Record on the way to Bronze in the Men’s S10 100m Butterfly Final, with Col Pearse just behind in fourth place. (vision here)
- Rachael Watson scored 50m Gold medals in Rio and Tokyo and now has a Paralympic Bronze medal to her name after finishing third in the Women’s S3 100m Freestyle final. (vision here)
- Jasmine Greenwood and Poppy Wilson were judged pipped from the podium in the Women’s S10 100m Butterfly, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
- Timothy Hodge nearly added to his three Paralympic medals from Tokyo but had to settle for fourth in the final of the Men’s S9 100m Backstroke.
Wheelchair Basketball
- The Rollers have bowed out in the Men’s Wheelchair Basketball quarter-finals going down 84-64 to Tokyo Bronze medallists Great Britain.
Boccia
- Dan Michel and Jamieson Leeson have started their Mixed BC3 Pairs medal campaign in impressive fashion with back-to-back pool victories over France and Japan. (vision here)
They now face Korea in the quarter-finals, where victory will set up a semi-final against Greece or Argentina.
Para Table Tennis
- Qian Yang twice fought back from a game down to advance the final of the Women’s WS10 Para Table Tennis, downing her Brazilian opponent in the semi-finals.
She now has the opportunity to defend her Tokyo Gold Medal against Poland’s Natalia Partyka on Wednesday evening.
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS – DAY 6
Para Swimming
- The Ihar Boki Show continued at La Defense Arena, with the Belarussian swimmer taking his fifth Gold medal of the Games in the Men’s SM13 200m Individual Medley in World Record time.
Boki is now the most-successful male in Paralympic history with 21 Gold medals. Only American swimmer Trischa Zorn (42) and Norwegian Winter Olympian Ragnhild Myklebust (22) have topped the podium more. - China delivered the first podium clean sweep in Paris in the Men’s S5 50 Backstroke, taking Gold, Silver and Bronze.
Even more remarkably, they doubled up in the Women’s S5 50 Backstroke with another 1-2-3 finish.
Para Athletics
- Cuba claimed a pair of Gold medals at Stade de France, including Omara Durand Elias‘s win in the Women’s T12 400m (with guide Yuniol Kindelan Vargas). It is her fourth straight Paralympic victory in the event and takes her to nine career Gold medals to add to her 14 World Championships.
