AUSSIES IN ACTION – DAY 4

Paralympic Games Paris 2024 on Stan - Day 5 Preview
Iconic duo Grant Patterson and Ahmed Kelly power to Medley medals

Para Rowing

  • After setting a Paralympic Games Best time in the heats, Nikki Ayers and Jed Altschwager took all before them in the Mixed PR3 Double Sculls Final to win Australia’s first-ever Gold in Para Rowing.
  • Erik Horrie scored his fourth-career Paralympic medal after originally crossing the line in fourth place. Italy’s Giacomo Perini was disqualified after being found to have a communications device in his boat, elevating Horrie to the podium.

Para Swimming

  • Dynamic duo Ahmed Kelly and Grant ‘Scooter’ Patterson have once again shared the Paralympic podium, repeating their Tokyo efforts to finish second and third respectively in the Men’s SM3 150 Individual Medley. Kelly needed to overcome a disqualification in the heat which was subsequently quashed after officials agreed his butterfly technique in the freestyle leg was legal.
  • After both scoring medals in the 50m on day one, Rowan Crothers (Silver) and Tom Gallagher (Bronze) picked up more silverware in the Men’s S10 100m Freestyle. Australia featured three swimmers in the final with Alex Saffy taking seventh.
  • Australia took Silver in the Mixed S14 4x100m Freestyle Relay thanks to a great team performance from Jack Ireland, Madeleine McTernan, Ruby Storm and Ben Hance.

Para Athletics

  • Twenty-year-old Mali Lovell has raced to Bronze in the final of the Women’s T36 200m, fighting back from fifth in the final straight to sprint onto the podium.
  • Dayna Cress threw Area Record with her first throw of the Women’s F34 Javelin Final, her 17.65m effort good enough for Paralympic Bronze.
  • Chad Perris set an Area Record in the final of the Men’s T13 100m Final, falling agonisingly short of the podium by just 0.005s.

Wheelchair Rugby

  • Australia will play for Bronze after a nailbiting loss to Japan in the semi-final. The Steelers attempted to run down the clock and score near the end of regulation time, however a turnover resulted in the match being forced into overtime after the scores were tied. Japan gained an early advantage upon resumption which the Steelers could not overcome.

Para Cycling

  • Gordon Allan, Alaistair Donohoe and Korey Boddington have powered to Bronze in the Men’s C1-5 750m Team Sprint. The Aussies were down by a tenth of a second with one lap remaining before C4 1000m Time Trial Gold medallist Boddington scorched the final 250m to finish in front of France in the Bronze medal race.
  • Kane Perris (pilot: Luke Zaccaria) finished just out of the medals with fourth place in the Men’s B 1000m Time Trial.

INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS – DAY 4

Para Swimming

  • On a day which saw Great Britain win 12 Gold medals, Team GB swimmers took out four events at La Defense Arena including Maisie Summers-Newton who claimed the Women’s SB6 100m Breaststroke in Paralympic Record time.
  • Mykhailo Servin (UKR) set a new World Record in the Men’s S11 100m Backstroke Final.

Para Athletics

  • Team GB’s wheelchair racing legend Hannah Cockcroft scored her eighth Paralympic medal in the Women’s T34 100m and like her other seven, it was also Gold. She has won the event at every World Championship and Paralympic Games since 2011.
  • Sibhatu Kesete Weldemariam became Eritrea’s first-ever Paralympian in the Men’s T54 400m heats. Kosovo and Kiribati will also feature their first Paralympic athletes in Paris.

Para Rowing & Para Cycling

  • Team GB’s day four dominance continued in Para Cycling and Para Rowing. At the velodrome the Brits won three of the four Gold medals on offer while at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, GB won three of the five events and scored another silver.
