AUSSIES IN ACTION
Swimming
- Kyle Chalmers finished second in the Men’s 100m Freestyle behind China’s Pan Zhanle who broke his own World Record en route to victory. It is Chalmers’ third-straight medal in the event after Gold in Rio and Silver in Tokyo.
- Tokyo Gold medallist Zac Stubblety-Cook backed up his Gold Medal in Tokyo with Silver in 200m Breaststroke behind French superstar Leon Marchand.
Canoe Slalom
- In winning the Women’s C1, Jess Fox claimed her second Gold Medal at Paris 2024, became the most successful Canoe Slalom athlete in Olympic history and is now Australia’s most successful individual Olympic medallist.
BMX Freestyle
- Natalia Diehm improved on her Tokyo fifth place to become the first Australian woman to win Bronze in the Women’s BMX Freestyle.
- Logan Martin was unable to defend his Gold Medal from Tokyo, finishing ninth in the Men’s Final.
Water Polo
- The Aussie Stingers have won a dramatic shootout to remain undefeated in Group A. With the scores locked at 7-7 at full-time, Australia outlasted the Netherlands for a 15-14 victory.
Hockey
- The Hockeyroos remain undefeated in Pool A after a 3-0 victory over the USA. Australia has conceded just one goal in their opening three matches of the tournament and have locked in a Quarter-Final berth with two pool matches remaining.
Shooting
- Having had to come through a shoot-off just to qualify for the final, Penny Smith won Bronze for Australia in the Women’s Trap.
Tennis
- Matt Ebden and John Peers will play for a medal in the Men’s Doubles after winning their Quarter-Final against Germany in two tie-break sets.
- Ebden and Ellen Perez are out of the Mixed Doubles after the second seeds lost their Quarter-Final to China in a third set super tiebreak.
- Alexei Popyrin has bowed out of the Men’s Singles, going down to Alexander Zverev (GER) in straight sets.
Football
- The Matildas have a nervous wait to see if they progress to the Quarter-Finals following a 2-1 loss to the USA. They will move to the next stage if they finish as one of the two best third-ranked teams.
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Swimming
- Leon Marchand (FRA) has won his second and third Gold of the Games, backing up his victory in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley by winning the 200m Butterfly and 200m Breaststroke in the space of two hours, both in Olympic Record time.
- China’s Pan Zhanle set the first World Record in the pool, bettering his own mark on the way to Gold in the 100m Freestyle winning by more than a second ahead of Australia’s Kyle Chalmers and 200m Freestyle Gold Medallist David Popovici (ROM).
- Sarah Sjoestroem (SWE) won her second Olympic Gold Medal, eight years after winning her first. The Swede took out the Women’s 100m Freestyle in a tight finish with less than two-tenths of a second separating the top four swimmers. Australians Mollie O’Callaghan and Shayna Jack finished fourth and fifth respectively.
- Katie Ledecky (USA) has won her sixth individual Olympic Gold Medal by defending the Women’s 1500m she won in Tokyo. She joins Jenny Thompson (USA) with eight Gold Medals, the most by women in Olympic history. Australia’s Moehsa Johnson finished sixth.
Basketball
- Team USA continue their commanding run through the Men’s tournament despite a courageous effort from South Sudan.
Traithlon
- Alex Lee ran down Hayden Wilde (NZL) over the last kilometre in a thrilling finish to the Men’s Triathlon to win Great Britain’s sixth Gold Medal at Paris 2024.
- In front of a huge home crowd, Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) broke away in the final stages to take out the Women’s Triathlon in a race marred by a number of crashes on the slippery cobblestones of the Paris streets.
