Jerry Rice says 49ers have become Melbourne’s home team – NFL legend Jerry Rice says the San Francisco 49ers have won over Melbourne as they prepared to face the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG.
Speaking with Seven’s Xander McGuire ahead of the game, Rice said the 49ers’ early arrival had made a visible impact across the city. The former wide receiver believes the team’s local support has grown to the point that the designated away side feels like the home team.
“They came in early and pretty much have taken over this city,” Rice said. “The Rams, they’re supposed to be the home team, right? I think Niners are the home team.”
Rice said he had enjoyed his time in Australia and was looking forward to the contest, while backing San Francisco’s defence to make the difference. He also expects a strong 49ers presence among the 100,000 fans at the MCG.
The appearance is another sign of how the NFL’s Melbourne showcase has put one of the league’s biggest rivalries in front of a major Australian crowd, with Seven carrying the game live and free.
