Into the Deep: Australia’s Submarine Gamble on Sky News Australia – Sky News will premiere a new one-hour documentary, Into the Deep: Australia’s Submarine Gamble, presented by Sky News Investigations Reporter Jonathan Lea on Tuesday 25 February at 7.30pm AEDT.
The special investigation examines the real story behind AUKUS, the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the UK and the US announced on 15 September 2021.
Lea investigates how the deal came together, and examines the implications for Australia, our partners, and global security, in an increasingly volatile world. He hears firsthand the inside story of the secret meetings that rocked global politics, when Australia pulled out of its deal to buy French submarines, with candid revelations from AUKUS architect and former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

As work gets underway on Australia’s new fleet of nuclear submarines, at an estimated cost of $368 billion, Sky News is granted extraordinary access to the nation’s current Collins-class submarine fleet. Sky News cameras are on board with the crew as they’re put through their paces during an exercise simulating an attack by enemy planes.
The documentary also asks the question: could emerging military technologies make the new submarines obsolete even before we get them?
Jonathan Lea said:
“AUKUS isn’t just a project, it’s a series of nation-building mega projects that revolve around eternal questions – will Australia’s future force arrive on time and budget? And will the world be better or worse by the time we’re slated to get them?.”
