Tonight | Richard E Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey on SBS: the journey begins in Malta – Richard E Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey sets sail tonight. The actor starts his Mediterranean journey in Malta, and the four-part series premieres at 7.30pm on SBS.
Across the series, Grant travels from Malta and Turkey to Sicily, Italy, Tunisia, Corfu and Ithaca. At each stop, he traces places believed to have inspired Homer’s The Odyssey.
The ancient poem follows Odysseus on his long voyage home after the Trojan War. Grant’s version is a modern travelogue built around those famous stops.
Richard E Grant arrives in Malta
The first leg takes him to Malta, a sun-drenched island nation steeped in epic history. Many believe it was the paradise of the goddess Calypso.
In the poem, Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island for years. That makes Malta a fitting place to begin a journey that follows the hero’s route.
History, culture and landscape
Along the way, Grant discovers the rich histories, cultures and landscapes that continue to captivate travellers today.
The series mixes myth with modern travel. Each episode is about the places as much as the story that made them famous.
With four episodes, the journey moves quickly. Malta is only the first of several islands and coastlines Grant will explore.
Richard E Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey airs Sunday 1 November at 7.30pm on SBS and streams free on SBS On Demand.
