Tonight | The Hunt for King Knut on SBS: scientists open a royal burial site at Winchester – The Hunt for King Knut: England’s Viking King follows a rare scientific search tonight. For the first time, a royal burial site has been opened at Winchester Cathedral. The documentary airs at 8.25pm on SBS.

Scientists and historians are trying to solve a 400-year-old mystery. Their goal is to locate the remains of Knut, one of England’s most important early kings.

Knut, also known as Cnut or Canute, ruled England in the 11th century. He is remembered as a Viking king whose reign reached across the North Sea.

The film follows the team as they exhume and test ancient bones. Experts then use cutting-edge science and technology to confirm whether the hunt has been successful.

That work relies on careful testing. Each result helps the team decide whether the remains really belong to the king.

Testing the theories

The documentary also explores theories about Knut and his family’s life. If his remains are found, they could show which of those theories are accurate.

In that way, the bones are more than a historical curiosity. They could reshape what is known about one of England’s early royal families.

It is a one-off special, so the whole investigation plays out in a single night.
