Tonight | 70 Up on SBS: the landmark life-study reaches its finale – The long-running Up documentary project reaches its final 70 Up episode as its participants reflect on lives followed across decades. It airs Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 8.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Few screen projects have returned to the same people so regularly, making the last chapter a chance to see how earlier hopes and choices have changed with age.

Final episode

The series began in 1974 and revisited a group of people roughly every seven years from childhood into adulthood. This closing chapter follows them as they approach old age.

Director Asif Kapadia takes over from Michael Apted, who died in 2021. Kapadia is known for documentaries about Ayrton Senna and Amy Winehouse.

The final episode completes the two-part 70 Up broadcast on SBS. Its value lies in the accumulated time with the participants, rather than a single turning point or twist.

70 Up Final episode airs Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 8.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.
