Married at First Sight UK ends on Channel 4: what it means for Australia

Married at First Sight UK ends on Channel 4: what it means for Australia — Channel 4 has ended its run of Married at First Sight UK after allegations of sexual misconduct involving former participants prompted independent reviews. Channel 4 will also withhold an already-filmed UK series. For Australian viewers, the immediate distinction is that Channel 9’s local edition is a separate commission, and Nine has announced a 2027 season.

The decision raises a serious question about participant welfare across reality television. It does not, by itself, cancel Married at First Sight Australia. Different broadcasters and production companies run the two editions. Nine has made no announcement withdrawing its next season.

Why has Channel 4 ended Married at First Sight UK?

Channel 4 outlined the decision in a 5 November statement. Chief executive Priya Dogra commissioned two external reviews in April. A BBC Panorama investigation had aired allegations about a small number of past UK contributors. The ABC reported that two women alleged rape by men paired with them on the programme. A third woman alleged a non-consensual sexual act. The men denied the allegations. These are allegations, and neither review decided whether they were true.

The Clyde & Co review found Channel 4 and UK producer CPL Productions had welfare protocols compliant with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. The review found no breach in how they handled the issues. It did identify isolated gaps in applying protocols and suggested stronger safeguards. Lorraine Heggessey led a second review. She concluded the programme could reasonably continue with enhanced safeguards and format changes.

Dogra made a different editorial decision. Channel 4 said those changes would fundamentally alter the programme’s format. It will not commission another series. Channel 4 will withhold the completed UK season. Its production predates the proposed safeguards. Production of the spin-off Second Married at First Sight will not resume.

Channel 4 stressed that the reviews did not determine the underlying allegations. The relevant authorities must address those. The finding of no Ofcom-code breach does not settle whether the alleged incidents occurred.

Is Channel 9’s Australian series affected?

There is no announced change to Nine’s next Australian series. Nine’s 2027 programming announcement lists season 14. It names John Aiken, Alessandra Rampolla and Marryam Chehelnabi as its experts. Endemol Shine Australia makes the Australian show for Nine. CPL Productions makes the UK edition for Channel 4. One broadcaster ending its version does not automatically determine the other’s schedule.

Nine’s season-14 casting information asked applicants to reserve up to four months from late July to November 2026. That points to a substantial production period this year. It does not establish how much filming the team has completed. Nor does it make broadcast inevitable: Nine controls the Australian scheduling decision. The checked 2027 announcement gives the year, but no confirmed February premiere date.

Australian welfare questions remain separate

The UK decision is relevant to a wider discussion about how reality shows protect participants. Australian allegations and complaints should be assessed on their own evidence. In June, ABC’s 7.30 reported former Australian participant Tahnee Cook’s account. She said she felt pressure to be intimate during her time on the show. Nine and Endemol Shine Australia told the ABC they take their welfare obligations seriously. That account is separate from the criminal allegations reported in the UK.

For now, the clearest practical answer for viewers is that Channel 4 has ended its UK run and will withhold the completed UK series. Nine is still publicly listing an Australian season for 2027. Any change to the Australian production or its premiere would require an announcement from Nine, rather than an assumption drawn from Channel 4’s decision.
