Tonight | Recipe of the Year on ABC: home cooks take on budget cooking – Recipe of the Year puts money at the centre of the menu tonight. The eight remaining home cooks must prove that great recipes do not need to cost a lot. The episode airs at 7.30pm on ABC and ABC iview.
It is episode four of seven, so the competition has now reached its halfway point. From here, every challenge matters more.
The series celebrates the recipes Australians cook at home. Each week, the cooks bring dishes that mean something to them, while the farm setting keeps the focus on simple, honest food.
Recipe of the Year goes low-cost
This week, the brief is the tastiest low-cost recipe. The cooks can lean on clever pantry staples, reinvented leftovers or hearty classics that stretch a small budget.
However, saving money is only half the task. The food still has to be big on flavour, and every dollar has to count.
A CWA budget classic
Across the episode, budget cooking is tested in two ways. First, the cooks present their own resourceful recipes. Then they take on a classic CWA budget recipe.
The CWA challenge brings a different kind of pressure. Instead of cooking their own family dish, the cooks must deliver a tried-and-tested recipe that many Australians will already know.
At the end of the night, another home cook will leave the farm. That leaves seven to fight on for the title.
Budget cooking is something most households know well. As a result, tonight’s recipes may be some of the most useful of the series to try at home.
