Dustfall premieres Sunday: what to know about Anna Torv’s ABC crime drama — Anna Torv stars as Detective Tig Pollard in the new six-part Australian series, which begins on ABC TV at 8.20pm on Sunday 11 October. All six episodes will also be available on ABC iview, giving viewers the choice to follow the television run or stream the full story.

TV Central covered the initial announcement in September. This weekend guide brings together the confirmed premise, cast, creative team and viewing details, with the official trailer below. It is a preview of the series, not a review of episodes we have watched.

What is Dustfall about?

Torv’s Tig Pollard is investigating a sexual-assault case when a key suspect is found dead. As she follows the evidence, the inquiry pushes her to confront long-buried events from her own adolescence. ABC describes the series as “Tropic Noir”, a crime story shaped by its Gold Coast location rather than a conventional city-police setting.

The drama is adapted from Vikki Petraitis’s novel The Unbelieved. That source material gives the series a defined mystery, although the broadcaster has not presented the adaptation as a documentary or a retelling of a real case. Its sexual-assault subject matter is worth knowing before choosing to watch.

Who joins Anna Torv in Dustfall?

Juliet Stevenson, Zoe Phillips and Kate Box are among the principal cast. The ensemble also includes Peter Fenton, Jay Ryan, Bert LaBonte, Lila McGuire, Ben Knight, Harry Gilchrist, Ling Cooper Tang, Gemma Chua-Tran, Alice Ansara and Martin Sacks. ABC’s announcement names the cast but does not supply character descriptions for everyone, so the trailer is the better first look at how they fit into Tig’s investigation.

Torv’s return to ABC follows The Newsreader. Her other recent Australian television work includes Territory. Here she is at the centre of a new story rather than returning to an established character.

The team behind the six episodes

Dianne Taylor, Stuart Page, Belinda Chayko and Beatrix Christian adapted the book for television. Their credits include After the Party, Total Control, The Survivors and Black Snow. Emma Freeman, who also directed episodes of The Newsreader, directs all six parts of Dustfall.

The series is a Soapbox Pictures and Moonriver production, commissioned by ABC in association with the BBC. Screen Australia and the ABC provided major production investment, with support from the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland. Deb Balderstone produced the series.
